This is such a fascinating area to look at. It does seem odd that we stick to only a few methods of teaching maths skills without realising that they might only work for some of the pupils in our class.
This website https://www.olicav.com/ might be of interest to you to explore ways of delivering the new methods to enhance retrieval of the skills. I’m using some of his info to change the way I introduce new concepts to my S2 class because they too find it so challenging to recall a skill.
