In our last session of art we discussed ‘Room 13’. This is a project which our lecturer was involved in which a vacant room within a small school in Fort William has been transformed into an art studio for the pupils. The pupils have freedom within this studio and are not restricted by the teachers plans so are able to create pieces that reflect their thoughts and feelings while allowing them to be as creative and imaginative as they please. However before entering Room 13, pupils have to have completed their work to an appropriate standard and so this is an incentive to complete their work within other areas of the curriculum. The pupils are involved in the committee which runs the studio, they make sure that the facility is kept clean and that resources are available. They raise funds for Room 13 by creating and selling their own art work.

Within this session we looked at the art work created within Room 13 and interpreted what we thought the pupil who made the art work felt or was thinking while they created it. There were various interpretations of what everyone thought each art piece meant.

By giving children this responsible it allows them to take their own thoughts and experiences and put it into their art work, this will allow the teacher to learn more about the children. It also allows children to not have to live up to expectations of when other are doing the same thing or if they are copying a professionals art work, this allows them to become more confident within their abilities as they are not comparing their work.
