In our second lesson of art, we started by focusing on the phrase ‘I can’t draw’ which is constantly used by both adults and children. We looked at the story of ‘The Dot’ by Peter H. Reynolds which is where a girl believes that she can not draw but is encouraged by her teacher to start with a mark and see where it takes her and so the girl draws a dot. The teacher then frames her art work as she thinks that everyone is creative in their own way and this leads to the girl believing in herself. Within teaching it is important to encourage children to express themselves and allow them to be as creative as they want to be and not to discard any pupils art work. ” I have the freedom to discover and choose ways to create images” (Expressive arts – curriculum areas – learning and teaching, 2016). They should be allowed to have an opportunity to use their imagination and express themselves instead of all the class creating uniformed drawings.
We then made prints markings using black ink and our hands. We made a mark on the paper with any part of our hand and then used our imagination to create something out of that mark using pens and pencils. Then we looked at other peoples art work to see what they had created. This allowed for every artwork to be unique and within primary school will enhance cognitive development.
