Curriculum For Excellence
Throughout their time at Dumfries Academy, pupils will follow a rich and varied curriculum build on the foundation of Scotland’s national curriculum: Curriculum For Excellence. This aims to put learners at the heart of education and enable them to become Responsible Citizens, Effective Contributors, Confident Individuals and Successful Learners.
Broad General Education
From S1 to S3, pupils will build on the Broad General Education that they received at primary school. In S1 and S2, this involves experiencing a wide variety of subjects including English and Literacy, Mathematics and Numeracy, Modern Languages, Music, Drama, Art, Physical Education, Home Economics, Computing and IT, Technical, Social Studies and Science.
In S3, pupils are given a chance to personalise their curriculum by making some subject choices to augment their core curriculum while still ensuring a suitable breadth to their education.
Senior Phase
In the senior phase, learners will complete National Qualifications from level 3 to 5. Each pupil’s senior phase curriculum will be unique to them and the emphasis is on finding the best pathway for them. In S4, pupils continue with Maths and English as well as their chosen subjects. Learners then choose five subjects for S5 and up to 5 in S6.
In the senior phase pupils are given the opportunity to take advantage of our partnership with other schools in Dumfries Learning Town and the College Academy programme at Dumfries and Galloway College to expand the pathways available to them.
