S3
All pupils are encouraged to study a Modern Foreign Language in some capacity throughout S3 as part of their entitlement to a Broad General Education and in line with the Scottish Government’s 1+2 initiative. In S3, pupils can choose French, Spanish or both. Some pupils are directed to Modern Languages for Life and Work. The S3 courses are designed to prepare pupils for study at National 4/5 and beyond.
Courses are designed to develop and build upon skills and knowledge in Modern Languages introduced in primary school and S1/S2. Our curriculum aims to develop pupils’ ability to use language for real practical purposes and situations, by developing confidence and skills in the areas of reading, writing, talking and listening. Language learning embraces the Curriculum for Excellence capacities, and also helps learners prepare for life and work, as well as learning.
Both practical and written activities are undertaken. Topics taught are designed to be of interest to young people and allow pupils to express their own interests. A range of enrichment activities, helping to develop pupils’ cultural awareness and promote global citizenship, are also offered. These may include breakfasts or cooking, trips to see foreign films and plays and email communication with native speakers.
Learning a language has many benefits, both in school and life. It helps with literacy and communication skills and enhances employability, as well as being fun!
Pupils will be assessed in an ongoing manner throughout the course. They will have regular short grammar and vocabulary tests, as well as completing integrated end of topic assessments that allow them to apply their learning. Pupils will move through Level 3/4 Experiences and Outcomes, as appropriate.
