Print

Todays session was on learning through print. We were all given the opportunity to read ‘Exploring Printmaking’ by Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The resource encourages teachers to use print making in the classroom. Print making is a concept I am familiar with but not confident in. Having resources available that develop my knowledge and understanding of printmaking gives me more confidence to teach and use it across the curricular in the classroom. Printmaking can encourage children to problem solve, have creative discussions and work effectively with others.

I feel as a student teacher I should take pride in my not knowing as only through not knowing will I develop the tolerance for not knowing within the classroom. As a student teacher I feel it is very important for me to participate in sessions like today because it places me in the learners who will be in my classrooms shoes. Very often as adults we forget what it like to not fully have a grasp of a concept. After todays print making session I feel I have the confidence to plan and implement a lesson in the classroom.

Today I also make a start on my concrete poetry art piece. The piece is to be inspired by our evocative object, we were to use this time to express our thoughts and feelings through design. I decided to start by thinking of the colours that come to mind when I think of my evocative object; blue, white, and yellow.

BLUE – this colour makes me think of sadness, depth of feelings, tears falling and pain.

YELLOW – this colour makes me think of happiness, memories, changing times and recovery.

White – this colour makes me think of present times and the feeling of not knowing.

The more I explored these colours the more memories and emotions I felt. I decided to use chalk as my main resource as I wanted to feel the colours blend. The touch reminded me of hugs and warmth – strong memories from my evocative object.

These are the resources I started with when creating my concrete poetry art piece.

My evocative object always provides me with a feeing of pain but with hope therefore I wanted hope to be my feature work within my concrete poetry.

As the colours merge together I think of hope.

I decided to place my hand in ink and create a handprint following todays session of printmaking. The hand also symbolised security which I always felt when with my older brother.

Printmaking – my handprint which symbolises security.

On reflection I feel that this session was of great value. It enabled me to create with my emotions and express them through visual art which is something I feel should be encouraged in the classroom.
