Key Learning:
In this week’s session we were informed of the different types of disasters which occur in the world today. The different types of disasters which we looked at were: earthquakes, hurricanes, fires, volcanoes and typhoons. During our input we explored in some of these examples of disasters, for example volcanoes. We completed an experiment on volcanoes out of clay and different types of acid to see a small reaction and an eruption from this clay volcano.
We researched on earthquakes on the iPad’s and watched videos and looked at some facts, this gave us a good understanding of earthquakes and allowed us to increase our knowledge.
Having there been 5 different types of disasters we got into groups and presented to the class one of the disasters. This was very effective as I now have a clear understanding of all the disasters and we also learnt the different ways in which it can be taught. This was very useful and I gained a lot of knowledge and would feel confident in teaching science to a class.
Impact on my views/lifestyle/practice:
Having distributed the five different themes allowed me to focus and research on one in particular and then be able to rely on my peers to give me the knowledge on the other themes. This was done very well as we were all engaged and keen to learn and listen into the other themes.
The theme in which I was focusing on was earthquakes. This is a very interesting topic and there is so many different approaches you can make in making a lesson plan as there is a lot of information and activities.
Before researching into earthquakes I did not realise as to how many of them occur and the impacts it has on countries. It destroys homes, towns and can also take people’s lives.
Areas of interest to explore further/develop:
An area in which I would like to explore more is the theme fire, I feel more information could have been presented. This is a theme which in schools is discussed, for example, near bonfire night you get the firefighters come in and give a serious talk on the severity of dangerous fires. So I would like to gain more knowledge in this area.
