Week 4

ART

In this art session, we got to see and use different art  materials. There was a wide selection of paint brush of all different shapes and sizes and they were also made out of recycled materials.  This meant that everyone’s paintings would be unique and not uniformed. The lecturer read out a description of a scene and portrayed what he could see on the piece of paper. We then had to use our imagination to recreate this picture using only our primary colours and white. Most of the class had the same idea yet everyone’s picture was unique in their own way. This was very effective as we are not just coping the teachers work we are creating a piece through their own imagination and creativity.

From my experience at primary school, we would all just sit and watch the teacher draw or paint a picture and we would copy. This is not art, art is about being creative and using your own imagination. Copying others work is not effective.

Using different materials in primary school is effective as children are getting to see the different effects from the brushes, allowing them to choose freely which one they want to use.

DANCE

“One of the most powerful experiences dance educators can offer is the opportunity to create a dance that reflects their ideas.” (Cone, 2009).

This weeks dance session we were looking at the theme Halloween. We were split into the same groups from the previous week and told to practice our dance sequence from last week and then add on a new sequence which was Halloween themed.

Zara put four different pictures around the room.  A cat, a cauldron, a bat and a skeleton.

The class was split into four different groups and each group had to come up with a dance move for one of the pictures. Then as a class we shared our dance move and put them together. In a school environment this activity would be very active for the pupils and exciting. Everyone had an idea of what dance move was going t be represented for each picture but yet again everyone is unique so was slightly different to peoples expectation.

After this we all practiced our dance routines and put together our dance sequence from last week and adding on this weeks sequence. Once we had mastered this dance, we were given another list of dance moves and in our groups again had to come up with a dance for these moves. Some of the  moves were: jackhammer, spongebob, etc. Having never heard of some of the dance moves, as a group we had to use our imagination to come up with an idea of what this looks like. Having now complete three dance sequences we put all the move together to create a dance routine. The children would love this as they are given dance moves but told to use their imagination to come up with the way in which they present these moves. Each groups performance was unique but all similar and all consist of the same moves.
