Week 11

“I can use musical instrument to discover and enjoy playing with sound, rhythm, pitch and dynamics.”  (Expressive arts – curriculum areas – learning and teaching, 2016).

This weeks music session we were introduced to the ukulele. We learned the main 4 chords to play on a ukulele which was useful as this is what most songs are made up of which is highlighted by the song ‘4 Chords’ by the Axis of Awesome. This was a really fun lesson as we had the chance to practice the basic skills we had picked up by playing along to the song ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham. It was very useful as the ukulele is becoming a popular instrument within primary schools and somethings we will most likely encounter throughout our careers. While doing this activity children would barely notice that they are learning as it feels more like fun.

Todays session we continued with the micro-teaching tasks and it was my groups turn. We choose the book ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson.

We stared by explaining the story to the class but within a primary school classroom environment we would of read the book thoroughly first however time restraints prevented us from doing this during the task. We stopped explaining before the mouse met the Gruffalo and asked in groups if they could create a freeze frame of what they think would happen next. We asked simulating questions such as what would the mouse be feeling? What is the Gruffalo like? After that we  then explained the next part of the story when the mouse meet the Gruffalo and he passes back through the forest with the Gruffalo with them. We then got the class to do a thought tunnel where they picked a character and said one word as to how their character would be feeling. For children this would allow them to think like the character and gain a deeper understanding of them.

There are many more activities that this book could do as well as activities that would be cross curricular such as creative writing on what happened to the mouse and Gruffalo after their walk through the forest?
