In todays lecture, tutorial and independent study task I learned about inclusion and equality. I learned what inclusion is the three levels of inclusion and its importance. I also learned about the Advantages and what Peggy Mclntosh view was about this “privilege” as she called it.  I was able to look into this in more detail within the independent study task as I had the opportunity to research Peggy Mclntosh. I also learned what Equality is and raw opportunities, outcomes and conditions of equality. We looked into the five key dimensions of the equality of condition which are Resources, Respect and Recognition, Love Care and Solidarity, Power, Working and learning. I was able to learn about the Equality Act 2010 and the nine characteristics this Act protected against discrimination which are, Age, Disability, Gender reassignment, Marriage and Civil partnership, Pregnancy and Maternity, Race, Religion or Belief, Sex and Sexual Orientation.

Inclusion and Equality

From the lecture on Inclusion and Equality, I learned that inclusion is simply including individuals within a group or structure, allowing them to voice their own thoughts and opinions and for everybody to discuss their various different perspectives within society. Within inclusion there are three levels which all mean something fairly different. I learned from … Continue reading Inclusion and Equality

Inclusion and Equality

What is inclusion? Is it laws and policies which state that all types of people must have a voice? Or is it more than that? Are these laws and policies really any more than a steeping stone towards true fairness of treatment and opportunity? I believe not. I would agree with Nelson and Prilleltensky (2010) … Continue reading Inclusion and Equality

Inclusion and Equality

This week’s class was all about inclusion and equality, we looked at what inclusion and equality are, the three levels of inclusion, why inclusion and equality are important, the equality act (2010) and Allport’s scale of prejudice and discrimination.  We also looked at a couple of the theorists who worked on the different aspects of … Continue reading Inclusion and Equality

This week’s class was all about inclusion and equality, we looked at what inclusion and equality are, the three levels of inclusion, why inclusion and equality are important, the equality act (2010) and Allport’s scale of prejudice and discrimination.  We also looked at a couple of the theorists who worked on the different aspects of inclusion and equality.  I had a pretty god idea of what inclusion and equality are but I never realised all the aspects involved in Allport’s scale of prejudice and discrimination.  Allport’s scale has five levels: antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, physical attack and extermination.

Antilocution – making jokes and insensitive remarks about another group; expressing opinions that reflect negative stereotypes and negative images based on preconceived judgements rather than facts; expressing hateful opinions about another group; name calling, ridiculing, verbal abuse and insults

Avoidance – actively ignoring specific individuals and groups; maintaining social distance, isolating, marginalising and excluding = Apartheid

Discrimination – denying equal access to opportunities, goods and services = Segregation in the USA

Physical attack – persecution, assault, vandalism and hate crimes = KKK

Extermination – genocide, ethnic cleansing = The Holocaust, Rwandan Genocide

Here is a visual representation of what inclusion and equality look like.

Religion, Culture & ‘Unchurched’ Spirituality

Today’s lecture was an interesting one because we were exploring the idea of spirituality, and how it was different from religion. Spirituality is outside of the church, it arose when the idea of secularization began to infiltrate many countries. When I was doing my independent study, I looked deeper into de-Christianisation (where Christian influences are removed from something). I found it interesting to find out that it was first happened during a French Revolution. It was where the people went against the priests and ministers as they were seen to be a part of the new government, and they massacred many of them, others fled to other countries to get away. This saw the closure of many churches within France, many of which never reopened. This caused many French people to abandon their faith, many of whom never got it back, resulting in France becoming a more secular county instead of a predominantly Christian one. I also found it interesting to look at the census during the lecture, as it said that 11% of people considered their religion to be Jedi Knight.

However, I found it confusing when we went to the tutorial, I found it challenging figuring out how to incorporate a theorist into the question we had to answer. I believe once I revise this topic that it will make more sense to me and then I can start to relate the knowledge I have learned to that of a theorist.

It has been interesting learning about religion and unchurched spirituality as they have an impact on our society. Popular religions are decreasing in size whereas spiritual groups are increasing. Spirituality, in our modern society, is seen as a form of religion that exists outside the normal religious institutions. In our society, religion is happening outside of the standard ‘churches’ and instead people are turning to spirituality. This does not mean that religion is disappearing, it’s just branching out into different aspects which suit the needs of our modern people.

Religion, Culture and Unchurched Spirituality

From today’s lecture I have learned a lot more about religion and society that I didn’t already know. I have come to realise that the amount of people who would claim themselves to be religious has decreased significantly throughout the recent years . It was very interesting to learn about the views that different religions have, for example how Jehovah Witnesses refuse different medical procedures such as blood transfusions. I learned about the phrase ‘Unchurched spirituality’ which is a term I had never crossed paths with, before the lecture. I discovered that this can be associated with beliefs and rituals outside of a religion. Moreover, these people may believe in some aspects of religion or churches. They want to have a sense of individualism. When we split into the tutorials and in the independent study tasks I have gained more knowledge on theorists such as Karl Max, Max Weber and Bruce Lincoln. However, with all the knowledge we were taught in this lecture I do not fully understand every aspect of it and in particular the theorists views and therefore I will need to read up and research more about it to increase my understanding of it. This module is definitely opening my mind to all kinds of religions and their beliefs. I enjoy learning about it and find it very interesting.
