On the 30 January we looked at Inclusion and Diversity. We looked at these concepts and what their definitions were. We looked at the different attitudes towards inclusion and diversity, the benefits of the inclusion and diversity and also the potential barriers to inclusion and how to overcome these barriers. I feel that I did learn a lot in this session. I learned about the different levels of inclusion and why it is very important. I felt that I managed to cope with the main concepts and issues that were discussed in this session. I feel though that I could look back on a couple of the concepts such as the Equality Act (2010) and be able to refine my knowledge on that act.  I feel that my knowledge of these areas has increased as a result of this session however I feel that there is a couple of areas that I need to work on and in order to improve these areas I will look back on my notes and the lecture.

Prejudice and Ideology

On March 6th we looked at Prejudice and Ideology. I found this to be very interesting and I feel like I learned a lot today from the lecture, the independent task and the tutorial. I learned the difference between prejudice and discrimination.  I learned what sub cultures are and the vast amount of groups that … Continue reading Prejudice and Ideology

On March 6th we looked at Prejudice and Ideology. I found this to be very interesting and I feel like I learned a lot today from the lecture, the independent task and the tutorial. I learned the difference between prejudice and discrimination.  I learned what sub cultures are and the vast amount of groups that this covers. I learned simply what prejudice is and what Ideology involves. I feel that I do understand the main concepts from today as I was able to follow majority of what was being said and I was able to contribute a lot to the discussions we were having. I feel that I need to look back on certain areas today that I felt I didn’t fully understand like the term secularisation and just other terms I could do with knowing better. My knowledge as a result of today has improved greatly in the areas we discussed however I feel like I could do with bolstering my knowledge.  What I have learned helped me understand how prejudice impacts on both micro and macro worlds. One example is that your family can impact on how you view things while considering the micro world. In terms of the macro world the media can influence our prejudices based on what they write.

Societies and Lifestyles – Week 4 – 6/2/2017

Inclusion and Equality (Disability)   This week we continued to build upon the knowledge we had gained from last week’s session on Equality and Inclusion. However, this week had more of a slant towards Inclusion and Equality for disabled people in the workplace and in society. We began by working with others to begin a […]

Inclusion and Equality

In this lecture we discussed what inclusion is and what it can lead do. From my understanding, I think inclusion is the antidote of exclusion – including everyone, of all backgrounds, religions and cultures in a society and community. In this lecture we discussed what inclusion is and what it can lead do. From my understanding, I think inclusion is the antidote of exclusion – including everyone, of all backgrounds, religions and cultures in a society and community. Through promotion of inclusion of every individual – we are well on our way to helping society reach equality. We then learned about the Equality Act 2010 which was introduced on the 1st October 2010. It provides a UK-wide legislation which aims to protect the rights of individuals, advance equality of opportunity, and promote a fair and more equal society. This helps eliminate exclusion, harassment and discrimination.
After todays input, I have understood that there is a difference in inclusion and equality however they work in unison. I did not fully understand PCS analysis and have been doing further reading and have been taking more time to understand the lecture slides on moodle so I can put this into practise in the future.
This lecture opened my eyes to the importance of inclusion in society and how prevalent it is in the 21st century. As a teacher, I will be exposed to children of all backgrounds and I want them to feel at home and all equal when they enter my classroom each morning. This input has given me the knowledge, current termination and motivation to make sure I apply this in my future career.

Focus on Disability.

According to the Equality Act 2010, a person has a disability if s/he has a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on that person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. (EHRC, 2011) Disability is a very broad topic especially in relation to inclusion and equality. Many years ago, … Continue reading Focus on Disability.

After today’s lecture on Inclusion and Equality, my eyes have been opened to the world we live in today.  Using the wider reading provided, I feel like that helped tie up any lose ends in my head that I had about this subject. In the two inputs about inclusion, equality and disability, I learned a lot about what inclusion is and also the extent to which minorities are not included or treated as equals. In the two inputs about inclusion, equality and disability, I learned a lot about what inclusion is and also the extent to which minorities are not included or treated as equals. We learned about the individual, relational and societal levels of inclusion and how each one is important. Inclusion, being the antidote to exclusion of people due to their sexual orientation, ethnical background etc, is closely linked with equality. Equality in the workplace, in society, in relationships/friendships etc is very important as everyone deserves to have a voice and give their opinion. Allport’s scale of prejudice and discrimination shows the extent to which some people are not included and not given a voice.

We also discussed disability in detail and how people are excluded due to having a disability. We looked into the attitudes towards disability and how people treat those with a disability differently. Examples of this were discussed in the tutorial as we looked at how teachers treated students with disabilities and in each case, it seemed to be discrimination.

Week 4 Society and Lifestyles

Disability and Inclusion Today we got the opportunity to look further into inclusion and disability. Disability and Inclusion

Today we got the opportunity to look further into inclusion and disability. An interesting part of the lecture was when we learned about the universal design, this started off as an architecture term, where the design of buildings would be structured around everyones ability to use them. These designs could include ramps instead of stairs because everyone is able to use a ramp whereas not everyone is able to use the stairs. This design allows everyone to use the structure without feeling left out, therefore promoting the feeling of inclusion.

Last week I mentioned that I was looking at Allport’s Scale, and this week I got to apply this scale to real life situations of discrimination of disability. I found this really interesting and valuable as I could apply the scale to real life situations to allow me to understand the steps of the scale in more detail and form that information into a table.

Allport's Scale

This lecture was really interesting today, and I found the seminar particularly useful because we had to read situations and identify whether discrimination was taking place – all of the situations were to do with children in a school environment and how the teacher felt with it. With the situations we worked together, in groups, to find out whether the teacher was discriminating against them because of their disability and then we found ways to accommodate the children to make them feel included in the situation. This was very useful as as a future teacher all children need to feel included in every situation, following the Scottish curriculum’s GIRFEC policy (getting it right for every child). As a teacher, every child, no matter whether they have a disability or not, should have the same opportunity as every other child in the class.
