Developing Our ‘Risk Radars’ – Grantown Grammar School P7 Transition Event

Transitioning from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone when growing up – it is a big change! With big changes comes uncertainty, and with uncertainty often comes worry. This year, Grantown Grammar School requested the help of Academy9 in creating an event that could provide a smoother transition for current Primary 7 pupils who will be joining the school as S1 pupils after the summer, and we were more than happy to help!

The Risk Radar- P7 Transition event held at Grantown Grammar School at the end of February saw Primary 7 pupils from Grantown, Aviemore, Abernethy, Deshar and Strathdearn primary schools take part in a morning of Health, Wellbeing and Safety-focused activities at Grantown Grammar School. This gave pupils an opportunity to learn from professionals working on the A9 Dualling programme, develop their own ‘risk radars’ and connect with their future classmates.

Health and Safety in Everyday Scenarios

The event kicked off with interactive sessions on everyday safety and wellbeing. We discussed the risks associated with common situations that pre-teens may find themselves in, such as receiving a message from someone they don’t know on social media or merely crossing a busy road. Pupils then completed their own risk assessments for these scenarios, giving them an insight into how risk is assessed in industry.

Roads Construction Site Safety

Our more roads-specific activities explored the aspects of safety on roads construction sites. Given the ongoing construction projects along the A9, Academy9 are passionate about educating pupils on the potential risks and safety mitigation. The session covered:

  • Recognising Hazards: Identifying common dangers on a roads construction site, such as heavy machinery, uneven surfaces, and restricted areas.
  • Safe Practices: Learning how to navigate construction zones safely, including the importance of following signage and instructions from site personnel.
  • Mitigations: Learning about the measures that get put in place in order to minimise risk wherever we can in order to keep everyone safe.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Discussing the types of PPE we use both on and off a construction site to learn how it helps keep us safe from harm.

Our Academy9 professionals were also able to answer any questions the pupils had on what it’s like to work on a construction site.

Our S5 Mentors

The event was made all the more special with the support of S5 pupils from Grantown Grammar School, who will become S6 buddies next year. After undergoing an Academy9-led mentor training in the morning before the event, they fitted seamlessly into their mentoring roles and were instrumental in the success of the event. In their role as mentors, they were responsible for guiding the P7 pupils through the various activities and sharing their own experiences. Their involvement not only provided valuable support but also helped build new relationships and establish trust between the S1s to be and their future buddies. We are sure this will further aid the P7s in their transition into S1 after the summer.

A special thank you to the Pupil Support department at Grantown Grammar School for trusting Academy9 to deliver this event to help students broaden their knowledge on health and safety, foster new relationships and friendships, and continue to build skills for life.
