UNCRC

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is the base standard for children’s rights and sets out the fundamental rights of all children. The UNCRC is the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world and sets out the specific rights that all children have to help fulfil their potential, including rights relating to health and education, leisure and play, fair and equal treatment, protection from exploitation and the right to be heard. The UK ratified the UNCRC in 1991.

All children, young people and adults need to know about the UNCRC (Article 42). As a member of the United Kingdom which has signed and approved the UNCRC, this applies to Scotland and therefore children and young people have the right to know that they have rights.

Children and young people across Scotland will be learning about the UNCRC and their rights through programmes such as the Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA).

Shetland enters new frontier as UK space industry leader

Shetland is set to be at the heart of Scotland’s – and the UK’s – space industry success story, UK Government Minister for Scotland John Lamont said as he visited the Saxa Vord spaceport on Unst.

Saxa Vord is on track to launch its first satellites in 2023 – part of UK-wide efforts to gain up to a £4bn share of the global space market by the end of the decade. The Minister visited the site’s first, newly completed concrete launch pad, one of three orbital launch pads that will support up to 30 vertical launches a year from the former RAF station site, employing up to 200 people in connection with each launch.

GLASGOW STUDENTS WIN GOLD IN CIVIL ENGINEERING COMPETITION FOR SCHOOLS

A team of S5 students from Hillhead High School, Glasgow has won the gold award in the ICE CityZen competition, in which school teams learn about civil engineering by completing virtual game challenges. The competition is designed to inspire the next generation of civil engineers and help students get a taste of civil engineering as a career path.

Hillhead High School students, Carl Hass, Anas Al Aoubaedy, Finlay Hood and Murrad Al Dabbagh worked together to create a plan to improve connectivity between central Glasgow and the city suburbs with a tram line. Their proposed route would connect Glasgow Central Station, various entertainment hot spots, the Queen Elizabeth hospitals and Braehead Shopping centre.

More than 500 students from throughout the UK took part in the competition, and as first place winners, the Hillhead High School team will receive £1,000 and a further £1,000 for their school. The team also won a wave tank, donated by the JBA Trust, which can be used for practical demonstrations in physics and geography teaching.

The team had the support of a civil engineering mentor to get a deeper insight into the industry. ICE STEM Ambassador Mhairi Porteous worked with the students to advise them throughout the process.

The Hillhead High School team said:

“We’re very grateful to take part in this amazing competition and have our suggestion for the wonderful city of Glasgow listened to by the civil engineering industry.

We really enjoyed the weekly challenges and had so much fun filming our project. – we hope our hard work and effort can make a truly positive impact and that this will open up opportunities for us and others in the future.

The CityZen effect

Now in its second year, the ICE CityZen Award is already having a measurable impact on the students who participate.

Of the 540 students who took part last year, one third said they were interested in civil engineering as a potential course or future career at the beginning of the competition.

By the end of the experience, nearly 80% of students who took part in CityZen said they would consider civil engineering as a career.

SAVE THE DATE – Outdoor Access Code Session

We will be running a session on the Scottish Outdoor Access code on 25th April from 4pm – 5pm – Eventbrite link will be live soon and we will keep you posted when.

In the meantime, save the date and take a look at the resources available. In Scotland, everyone has the right to be on most land and inland water for recreation, education and for going from place to place providing they act responsibly. These access rights and responsibilities are explained in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code is relevant to everyone in Scotland, wherever they live. If young people have an understanding of their rights and responsibilities under the Code, they will be more able to enjoy Scotland’s outdoors – responsibly!

This resource has been developed to help teachers and leaders support young people to explore and understand their rights and responsibilities in the outdoors and apply them to their daily lives. It provides activity ideas that are designed to be fun and thought provoking and add value to a number of curricular areas and cross curricular themes of the Curriculum for Excellence, including Learning Outdoors and Citizenship.

STEM Nation Online Resource

IOP Limit Less Inclusive Schools Month

This month is IOP Limit Less Inclusive Schools Month – part of the Limit Less campaign to inspire more young people to change the world and fulfil their potential by doing physics.   Across March, IOP are focusing on helping teachers to make schools inclusive and equitable for all students with new specialist teaching resources and events. At iop.org/InclusiveResources you will find a new evidence-led resource – Top Tips for Inclusive Science Teaching – which offers practical advice on making teaching, interactions and classrooms as inclusive as possible. There’s an accompanying Inclusive Science Teaching poster to go with it.

The booklet supports physics teachers with practical ways to make teaching, interactions and classrooms as inclusive as possible. It’s structured as nine guiding principles for inclusive teaching, arranged under the three themes of:

  • Creating an inclusive culture
  • Making the learning relevant
  • Building literacy and numeracy for science

Please do share the link to the new resources far and wide with those who you know will benefit from them. IOP are eager to understand how they are being used, the impact they are having, and for educators to use their new Talk Physics forum on the topic of inclusive teaching for discussion. They will also be running events on the new resources over the month, so keep an eye on IOP social media for details.

Technologies planning Resource

The RAiSE network has created a range of technology planners to support teachers develop and deliver a range of motivating and engaging learning experiences across the primary curriculum.

The resources cover a range of technology areas – digital literacy; food and textiles; technological developments in business and society; craft, design, engineering, and graphics; and computing science.

They provide advice, structures, and suggestions for learning experiences, skills development, and assessment. They are aligned with experiences and outcomes across the levels.

Laura McCafferty, National Education Officer for RAiSE, said:  “These planners have been a collective effort across our Primary Science Development Officer (PSDO) network and draw together inspired ideas which support teachers to develop and deliver technology lessons in an accessible, exciting way.

“This approach has been directly influenced by the success of the Science Planning Resource which has been accessed on the Education Scotland STEM Nation online resource page over 2800 times alone. The feedback and impact has informed the approach to this range in order to best support teachers.

“We are looking forward to seeing these planners implemented in classrooms and recognising the value to children in their learning.”

Links have been made to technologies capital with real-life context, Developing the Young Workforce and home learning.

The resources were quality assured by the Education Scotland Digital Team.

The planners are freely available here.
