Project Co-ordinator opportunity with Fèis Rois

Fèis Rois is offering an exciting opportunity for a young person aged 16 – 20 to join its team as a Project Co-ordinator.

The successful candidate will be offered a 1-year full-time contract at Fèis Rois, as well as having the opportunity to work towards a nationally recognised qualification in Community Arts Management through the Creative Apprenticeship scheme.

The apprentice will have the opportunity to work on a number of Fèis Rois projects, including residential courses, the Ceilidh Trail and the national Fèis Rois schools programme.

The successful candidate will also receive numerous professional development opportunities, including:
– Mentoring from experienced members of the Fèis Rois staff team;
– First aid and child protection training from external providers;
– In-house CPD opportunities, including social networking, IT, and creative courses.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about the arts and who has an interest in traditional music. You will have excellent communication and organisational skills and the ability to work as part of a small team.

Salary: £8,500 – £12,500
Term: Fixed Term (One Year)

Making Tracks at Campsie View with Quavers Music

Kirsty Hamilton From Quavers Music has been working at Campsie View School
to provide Music Opportunities for Children.

The project ‘Making Tracks’ which began in January and finishes in June
2013 will enable children and young people with additional support needs to
access high quality music making activity. Children will be supported to
take ownership of their work by leading the group in performance of their
composition. Quavers Music courses develop Emotional Personal and Social
Skills, Communication and Language; Knowledge and Understanding of the
World, Physical Development: and Expression and Imagination.

The project has been supported by Creative Scotland’s Youth Music
Initiative, Quavers Music and East Dunbartonshire Leisure Culture Trust.

East Dunbartonshire Youth Music Forum

East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust has been successful in securing funding from Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative to establish a Youth Music Forum in East Dunbartonshire.

East Dunbartonshire’s Forum will be established through an initial mapping of music provision highlighting the wealth of quality opportunities currently offered and new wider opportunities to support young people to engage in music activity. A report detailing this will be available in June 2013.

A series of events and professional development opportunities will be offered to teachers, music tutors music groups and young people. East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust are currently looking for volunteers and music
organisations who would like to be involved.

Fuselab – an immersive learning experience for 16-20 year olds

Fuselab is an out of this world experience for 16-20 year olds at Edinburgh’s
Summerhall in which they’ll plan the future of an uninhabited world.

Fuselab is looking for 80 innovative and creative minds – scientists, artists and
engineers – to help develop a sustainable way of life, free from the
constraints of the systems and structures we live by here on Earth.

Participants will be asked to challenge their thinking through workshops, skills sessions, talks and games; collaborating to design, prototype and test ideas.

Applications for both sessions close on Wednesday 8 May.

40 participants will be selected per session.

Design a book cover competition

UK primary schools are invited to take part in the Baillie Gifford Design a Book Cover competition. The competition theme is designed to bring out what children are interested in and what stimulates their imagination and curiosity. The overall concept of the book cover can be completely individual to each pupil or the concept can be based on a topic that they are currently studying.

There are two entry categories: P1-P3 and P4-P7. The winning designs from each category will be reproduced and displayed at the 2013 Edinburgh International Book Festival, which takes place from 10 to 27 August 2013.

The deadline for entries is Monday 1 July 2013

Paolozzi Prize for Art – News from Edinburgh CLN

Four young people in Edinburgh were celebrated for their artistic achievements at a ceremony at the National Gallery of Scotland this week when the Paolozzi Prize for Art was awarded.

27 pupils were nominated from 13 High Schools and Edinburgh Secure Services, who attended the award ceremony along with their art teachers, families and friends.

Artist and judge Duncan Robertson said:

“Eduardo Paolozzi was a great encourager of young talent, and would have been very supportive of this award in his name”.

This annual prize was organised by the City of Edinburgh Council’s Arts and Learning team in partnership with the National Gallery of Scotland.

Look, Capture, Create – national Glow creativity project

Glow Learning Experiences – Week beginning 13 May

The ‘Look, capture, create’ interdisciplinary learning experience takes place over four weeks and is aimed at second level learners. Developed in partnership with Dundee Contemporary Arts it explores the use of designer/illustrator Johanna Basford’s exhibition ‘Wonderlands’ to improve understanding of the importance of Scottish biodiversity through skill development in art and design and science creativity challenges.

These experiences have been planned to coincide with Scotland’s Nature Festival and Walk to School Week. The first 10 schools to sign up for two or more creativity challenges on the Glow TV schedule will receive 20 black ink pens, as recommended by Johanna Basford and a copy of her latest book ‘Secret Garden – An Inky Treasure Hunt’.

Scottish Natural Heritage reports that it is clear that for 10-17 year olds the importance of the natural environment appears to drop with age. Around 30% of 10-17 year olds have some knowledge of biodiversity, landscapes and special places for nature, while significantly more claimed knowledge about climate change.  Young people are an important biodiversity audience both now and in the future. By engaging with them today it is hoped the biodiversity message will be inherited by the next generation and so on.

This interdisciplinary learning experience will give learners direct access to illustrator/designer, Johanna Basford, a storyteller from the Scottish Storytelling Centre, artists from the DCA Community and Education team and a scientist from Dundee University to enable them to explore a series of creative challenges to learn about biodiversity, pattern and relationships in nature, visual elements and enterprise. Learning experiences will focus on improving observation skills in art and science, developing a curiosity and love of natural Scotland and an understanding of the importance of biodiversity. These experiences will culminate in the co-creation of a design to promote awareness of the importance and beauty of Scottish biodiversity.
