East Dunbartonshire Trails and Tails Programme – heritage learning through the arts

East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust has recently been successful in securing funding to deliver a community consultation. Eight events were held between April and May 2013.

The events asked eleven local communities questions about the importance of local heritage and place and explored the ways in  which we can creatively engage communities in their own Heritage through the Arts. The information gathered will inform a stage two application which aims to create a series of community and artist led sculptural trails across the authority thorough a two year programme of cultural activity and volunteer training programmes, working in partnership with local heritage groups and community councils.

This project has been provided in partnership with The National Lottery, Heritage Lottery Fund

S3 female pupils create performance for early years pupils

As part of East Dunbartonshire’s Creative Learning Network programme, Visible Fictions Theatre Company worked with a group of S3 female pupils over a period of 3 months at the end of 2012 to create a performance for early years The Christmas Bee

“It’s the night before Christmas and everyone is full of yuletide joy and merriness – well almost everyone.  When three misbehaving youngsters go a step too far it’s time for some Christmas magic to intervene and show them the error of their ways.  These young divas will never look at a pot of honey the same way again!!!

This immersive theatrical adventure combines classic storytelling with interactive play.  It has all the components of a feel good night out at the theatre and more.”

The Performance was delivered to an audience of 4 local nursery schools over two days – 19th and 20th of December 2012 at Kilmardinny Arts Centre Bearsden and was featured in a press article by the Milngavie and Bearsden Herald.

The Creative Learning Network in East Dunbartonshire aims to provide sustainable support mechanisms and enhancement of Network infrastructure for the engagement of pupils and staff in training, workshops and events.

The Network brings together an evolving collective of people who will develop a common language for Creative Learning by sharing experiences, ideas, skills and knowledge with one another through creative and cultural participation.

Creative Learning Exchange – Gateshead

The first gathering of the National Creative Learning Network (NCLN) took place in Gateshead/Newcastle on 12 and 13 September 2011. A group of  21 Creative Learning Networks (CLN) coordinators and partners from across Scotland met for two days of sharing, networking and inspiration.

The focus of our meeting was to look at networks: What makes a network work? How do you know? How can a network have an impact? What works well? What doesn’t?

Initially the group met with Creative Partnerships leaders from the North East to hear about their work and how networks have developed in the region, their own resulting in the Creative Exchange event. We heard how Argyll & Bute, East Dunbartonshire and Edinburgh are developing their Creative Learning Networks, which provided the stimulus for discussion around the CLN programme, covering issues such as engaging participants; timescales; supporting arts practitioners; working with schools, developing a shared language and  understanding of creativity  and how the NCLN can best impact on creative practice in Scotland. At the end of the day, we met Katherine Zeserson, Director of Learning and Participation at the Sage, Gateshead to learn about the region’s Bridge Programme, which aims to create a coherent and focused arts and culture offer for young people.

On Tuesday, the group attended Creative Exchange – Arts, Culture and Learning, at the Sage, Gateshead, which celebrated the arts and learning partnerships carried out through the North East’s Creative Partnership programmes. This event presented a great opportunity for sharing practice, meeting new contacts and professional dialogue around the power of creativity across learning.
