English

Welcome to the English Department

Our English department believes that our pupils should be presented with a wide range of language experiences, whether it is reading, listening, discussing or writing. In these contexts, our pupils are encouraged to develop their personal language skills. Importantly, our pupils are given the opportunity to freely research and discuss current issues.

In addition to this, our pupils are exposed to a wide range of literature, both traditional and modern, through short stories, novels, drama and poetry.

Curriculum

Broad General Education

Broad General Education, or BGE, refers to the period of time between S1 and S3. BGE corresponds with government guidelines which set out what students should be able to do in relation to literacy and English skills. At St Roch’s, we use these guidelines to ensure that pupils are prepared with all the necessary skills and abilities to move on to a positive destination, whether that be college, university or employment.

Senior Phase

N3/N4/N5/Higher

Senior Phase encapsulates S4-S6 and is the time when students will focus on gaining a multitude of different qualifications across the curriculum. Learning in the senior phase builds on what has been achieved in the BGE, giving students an opportunity to broaden their learning and further develop their skills. Students are expected to take on greater ownership of their own learning in the senior phase, including organising their study time and managing deadlines. Support will be provided via supported study and guidance from classroom teachers.

ESOL

At St Roch’s we offer courses for those who do not speak English as their native language. Skills developed in ESOL include reading, writing, talking and listening as well as improving their knowledge of the English language.

The level of qualification that can be gained by an individual in ESOL is equivalent to English and carries the same SQF points which are used for entry into college and university courses.
