Social Subjects

Welcome to the Social Subjects Department

The Social Subjects Department aims to…

Geography
History

Our aim is to provide enjoyment and stimulate a lasting interest in History and to develop a better understanding of contemporary society by comparing past societies and their values with the present; studying contemporary problems in their historical setting. We hope to introduce pupils to their cultural heritage (local, national and international) and to provide a framework for reinforcing and developing basic skills. We provide a disciplined method of study, be encouraging the use of evidence, and an awareness of the need for evidence. We aim to help pupils develop a tolerant but critical attitude of mind, by the study of societies which are removed in time and place from our own.

We also provide an understanding of human development in the perspective of time, including an awareness of:

  • Change and continuity
  • Cause and consequence
  • The influence of the environment in shaping human development
  • The impact of change on individuals and societies

At Saint Roch’s we study a variety of different periods of history in order to give the pupils a wider understanding of historical events.
