FUNDING/SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT

Whether you are just starting to think about careers, or getting ready to leave school and enter the world of work, college, or university- myworldofwork.co.uk is a excellent resource to help you.
You can take careers quizzes to help you find out what careers match your skills and interests. You are also able to use their user friendly tools to create a CV, personal statement and cover letter, which will be essential for you whichever path you take when you leave Hillhead High.

This info graphic shows the predicted areas of growth in Glasgow. This is worth considering when planning next steps as these will be the sectors with the most job opportunities.
College
College is a place where you can study towards a wide range of qualifications such as: National Qualifications, National Certificates, HNC’s, HND’s and more. There are lots of different courses available on a variety of campuses, so you can choose the one that works best for you. Completing a college qualification could help you find employment or attend University and some college qualifications allow you to skip Year 1 or 2 of University. There is even an opportunity to attend college to undertake a course whilst remaining at school to gain further National 5s and Highers through the Glasgow Schools College Programme. Applications for college usually open in January, with courses beginning in August/September.

Foundation Apprenticeship
Foundation Apprenticeships are available to pupils in S6 and gives an opportunity to achieve a Level 6 qualification (equivalent to a Higher). They take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays (except Engineering Systems which takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) and include a work placement which is a great opportunity to learn important work based skills and build connections with potential employers. Applications open in January and places fill up quickly so it is vital that you are ready to apply as soon as places become available.

University
University allows you to study towards a Degree or Masters level qualification. This can open up a range of employment opportunities or give you access to graduate schemes with a range of different employers. Like college there are a huge number of available courses in Universities across the country or abroad. If you want to apply to University you need to apply through UCAS and write a personal statement. Some courses are really competitive so it is important that you make sure you meet any eligibility criteria before applying.

Apprenticeship
Apprenticeships are a great opportunity to earn whilst you learn. They give you a chance to learn skills and gain industry specific qualifications whilst working in your chosen industry and earning money. As well as traditional apprenticeship opportunities in fields such as construction, Modern Apprenticeships are also available which means there are more opportunities available than ever before. You should also register on the Glasgow Guarantee website to be kept up to date with various opportunities in our area.

Employment
Whether it’s a part time opportunity whilst you are at school, college or university or a full time job you are looking for, there are lots available. It is important to have a up to date CV and cover letter ready when you are looking for jobs as most employers will ask for you. You can use the www.myworldofwork.co.uk website to help you create you CV. You can apply for most jobs online or by handing in your CV to different businesses. You can register for email alerts that will let you know when a job you are interested in becomes available. You should also register on the Glasgow Guarantee website to be kept up to date with various opportunities in our area. If there is somewhere that you would really link to work then send them a politely worded email, letter or make a phone call. There is no harm in asking and you never know!
