Numeracy at Carnegie Primary School
At Carnegie, we use a conceptual approach to Numeracy and Mathematics. This aims to place more of a focus on developing children’s understanding of how and why number processes work, rather than simply just learning the procedures. At Carnegie, we aim to develop a solid understanding of the number system from the early years, which is then built upon as your child moves through the stages of Primary School. A variety of concrete materials will be used at every stage, to support deeper thinking and understanding. Children will then move on to develop their use of pictorial strategies to calculate and problem-solve, before learning a variety of written strategies that place an emphasis on the child applying their learned skills and understanding of the number system.
We regularly encourage ‘Maths Talk’ in the classroom and welcome children to choose their own preferred strategies and discuss how they arrived at their solutions.
At Carnegie, we operate fluid grouping systems for Numeracy and Maths. Pupils are given learning tasks that are appropriate for the level they are working at. This also means that the level of challenge and support they receive can change daily, as the Class Teacher assesses your child’s needs and plans accordingly.
At Carnegie, our goal is to develop children’s understanding, skills, mindset and resilience in Numeracy and Mathematics. This is achievable for all our learners through the conceptual approach used consistently across the school.
