Eco Committee Trip to Dynamic Earth

The Eco Committee visited Dynamic Earth’s Natural Curiosity Exhibition on the 5th of November 2013. Children enjoyed learning from a variety of different speakers at the exhibition stalls.

Children then went back in time on the Mother Earth of all Adventures on a tour around Dynamic Earth.

We finished our day trip by entering the Snowdome and watching a film called, ‘We are Aliens’. This was a fantastic experience for all. They couldn’t believe the special effects! They were so shocked when snow poured over us!

Provost Award Winners

Earlier in the year our school was nominated as part of the Learning to Achieve Falkirk Council Awards 2013 and received the runner-up prize for Enterprise and Careers work relating to the ‘One Planet Picnic’ Eco Schools Scotland work. We were then nominated and were absolutely delighted to win the Provost Award for the fantastic efforts of our pupils. Eddie McLean and Amber Sinclair attended the ceremony and received the award on behalf of the school. They were beaming with pride!

P5/6 Eco Week Clean Up

As part of Eco Week, each class had the responsibility to tidy up an area of the school grounds. P5/6 were responsible for litter picking in the playground and football pitch, and weeding one of the flower beds in the Quiet Area.

We all had a great time helping out with Eco Week!

We know how important it is to keep the school looking tidy and the dangers that litter can cause to wildlife.

Rain Gauges Update

We checked on our rain gauges again today.  In the eco pod there was 300mls of rain in our gauge.

In the quiet area and outside Miss McAulay’s office there was 200mls of rain.

We discussed why there was more rain in the eco pod.  We thought it might be because there was less shelter in the eco pod.  The rain here usually falls sideways so it might be hitting the buildings.  We also thought someone might have tipped a little water out.  We are going to ask that nobody touches our rain gauges over the next few weeks.

The great news is that they did have water in them, the pen was still on the side of the bottles and they hadn’t tipped over even though it was really windy at the weekend.

Planting in the inside outside eco pod!

Primary 7 have been digging and planting in the inside outside eco pod.  We have been planting lots of different plants. We planted herbs, heather and lots more. We planted two big bamboo trees too.  We also put in blackboards to draw on we have also have a once upon a time chair and we have little logs to sit on. Mr. Goodsir screwed the mirrors into the setting area and we can look out ourselves.  We go into the eco pod all the time and we really like it!

Whole School Litter Pick!

On Tuesday 21st May 2013 the whole school had a litter pick day around the school and Glasgow Road. People came from Tesco and Falkirk council to help us. First we had to choose a partner. Then went around the park, the co-op and the football pitch behind the school. It was so dirty and there was lots of litter.  There were sweetie wrappers, glass, and crisps packets, plastic, Irn bru cans and Cola cans.

After playtime everyone meet in the hall. The primary 7s and primary 6s went to Glasgow Road. We split up into three groups. One group went along to the bottom end, another group went to the top end and one stayed in the middle. At the top and middle there was loads of rubbish like hats, scarves, gloves, spoons, forks, knifes and metal bars .After that we back to school.  We hope everyone uses a litter bin and is responsible for their own rubbish. P7 Tom Kitchin Trip

On Friday the 1ST March primary 7 went to Tom’s Kitchin’s restaurant in Edinburgh. We were there because were won The Eco Schools One Planet Picnic competition out of the whole of Scotland.  Tom told us about his childhood and why he likes Scotland.  He told us that he loved cooking and he only uses in seasonal and locally produced foods. In the restaurant some of us got to taste an oyster and we all tried rhubarb.  The rhubarb was yummy!  We feel really lucky that we had this experience and will spread the word about local and seasonal foods!
