In Partnership with the Sutton Trust, University of Glasgow offers a week-long residential summer school aimed at high school students in their penultimate year of study. Successful applicants from around the UK will attend lectures and seminars, take part in stimulating activities around campus, and explore the city of Glasgow with their fellow scholars. Students will be introduced to the variety of academic areas that can be studied at university in Scotland. Additionally, all students complete an online Academic Skills module designed to prepare for the transition to Higher Education. Completion of this module will be taken into consideration upon application to the university and can form part of an adjusted offer of entry. Applications are now open and details of how to apply can be found here. The deadline to apply is midday on Tuesday 3rd March. You will require a reference from your Pastoral teacher (deadline 6th March). You must inform them and provide at least 1 week’s notice.

Strathclyde University is offering a 1-week Summer School for S3 girls (entering S4 in June). Engineering the Future for Girls is being delivered in collaboration with BP and BAM Nuttall and is designed to engage girls in a wide range of engineering challenges that will inspire them to become the next generation of engineers. The summer school is fully-funded by BP and BAM Nuttall and all student costs, including a contribution towards travel, will be covered. Strathclyde will accept applications from girls with any range of subject choices at National 5. The summer school is non-residential and therefore pupils should be able to make their way each day to the Strathclyde University Campus in the heart of Glasgow City Centre. For the pupils’ convenience, we have arranged for Mentors to accompany pupils from and to Queen Street train station, Glasgow Central train station and Buchanan Bus Station at the start and end of each day. If you are in S4 or S5 and would like to study any of the following: Chemistry Computer Science Electronic & Electrical Engineering Law Product Design Then you may be eligible for the Accelerate course at the University of Strathclyde. Accelerate is a one-week programme, for pupils at the end of S4 or S5 thinking about going to university. It aims to provide a targeted focus on the pupils’ chosen area of academic interest, giving them a head start on the road to their chosen career. The 2019 programme runs from the 24th to the 28th of June. Teams of academic experts have put together week-long Challenges in each of these subjects to allow you to find out all about your area of interest and the career opportunities open. Led by undergraduate and postgraduate student mentors from the relevant fields, you will undertake a variety of group challenges, as well as attending a careers and industry afternoon. Two of the Accelerate Challenges (Chemistry; and Product Design) have official accreditation on the SCQF Framework. This means that there will be some assessment on these programmes and, should you pass this, you will gain 5 credits at level 7. Level 7 is the same as Advanced Higher or first year university work. Working with our Audit or Tax teams, the successful candidates will be provided with training and support in basic accountancy skills in their first year, therefore a Higher Accounting qualification is not required. Candidates should have achieved or be aiming to achieve 135 UCAS which may equate to 5 Highers (or equivalent) over 1 or 2 years. Foundation Apprenticeships boosts youth employability. Foundation Apprenticeships are open to pupils in the senior phase of secondary school and support a range of career pathways including Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships, work, college or university. Across Scotland, they are being delivered in many schools in a number of ways, with pupils gaining industry relevant knowledge and improving the core skills currently being sought by employers. TECHNOLOGY STEP IN, STEP UP Join us for an insight into Technology at Morgan Stanley Morgan Stanley is made up of many talents and perspectives and our diversity is what makes us unique. The Step In, Step Up programme is an introductory one-day programme designed for female S4-S6 students. The day will give an oversight into the different technology programmes Morgan Stanley offers, as well as giving participants the opportunity to partake in interactive challenges, panel sessions and career workshops. On behalf of Glasgow’s regional colleges; Glasgow Kelvin College will be hosting an event at The Glasgow Film Theatre during Scottish Apprenticeship Week. “Skills for the Future – The Importance of Apprenticeships” The focus of this event is to raise the awareness of Foundation Apprenticeships (FAs) and the journey of our students through their FA. Following on from the national campaign by Skills Development Scotland, we welcome along any employer, parent, school teacher or pupil who wants to know more about Foundation Apprenticeships. The event will give key information and a guide to Foundation Apprenticeships. We will also have current employers and students there on the day to give an insight into their FA experience. Our Apprenticeship programme runs across a range of engineering specialisms including Track, Electrification & Plant, Signalling, Telecoms and Overhead Line. During your first 21 weeks you’ll be living and learning at Network Rail’s training centre in the Midlands. For the remainder of the 3 year programme you will work out of your local depot. In your first 21 weeks you’ll be one of 150 apprentices living and learning at Westwood, our world-class training facility. You’ll take on academic study at the same time as working and complete a series of work-based learning assignments and reports. Depending on the path you choose, once out in the field you could be: • Designing signalling schemes • Investigating loss of power to a substation • Repairing damaged track or developing new telecoms technology, all whilst making sure the trains keep running to schedule There’s lots to take in and a lot of responsibility to take on, but by the end of the scheme, you’ll be set up for a great future and career at Network Rail. Desired skills • You will have a good understanding of Maths, English, basic IT skills and are committed to further study and learning • You’re safety aware, with strong attention to detail and problem solving skillsYou’re happy to listen, learn from others with the confidence to communicate your own ideas and an ability to interpret and explain technical information Personal qualities • You need to be a good team player, enthusiastic and have a drive to succeed. Candidates need to be 18 on or before the 29 September 2019. This is because all apprentices will be required trackside from the outset of their training programme, ensuring we are compliant with Health & Safety requirements and regulations around shift patterns and working at night for under-18s. There is no upper age limit, our oldest apprentice was 37. The Lawscot Foundation – invitation for prospective law students to apply for an annual bursary and mentoring support. The Lawscot Foundation (a Scottish charity) would like to invite pupils to apply for a bursary and mentoring if they are: • considering studying law (the LLB) in Scotland, commencing in autumn 2019 • are facing significant financial barriers They aim to support at least eight students in 2019 by providing them with a bursary package of £2,500 per year during their studies, and a solicitor mentor to assist with careers advice. The closing date for applications is 24 May 2019. In order to be eligible to apply, pupils need to be able to answer yes to the following questions: – Do you have an offer to study law (known as the LLB) at a Scottish university?* – Is your parental /guardian total annual income under £34,000 and /or do your circumstances mean you would be unable to attend university due to your financial situation? The University of Glasgow is running a new free one-week Summer School this year, in partnership with the Sutton Trust. It will run from 7-12 July 2019 and is open to pupils who have just completed S5 and are continuing on to S6. It is a residential Summer School, with pupils living in University accommodation for the week. All meals will be provided and taken in University refectories and the Students’ Unions.
