Fairtrade Fortnight

First of all I would just like to say a huge thank you to all who attended and donated towards our Fairtrade Coffee Morning. We managed to raise £66.10 and exceeded our initial target set by the Co Op. Here are some pictures from the successful morning.

Over the past few weeks we have learned a lot about Fairtrade. We started off our topic discussing what we already knew about Fairtrade. Not many of us had heard of Fairtrade before.

We then had a look at some objects related to Fairtrade. We discussed together what they each showed and then decided which interested use the most. From this we decided as a class what we wanted to start learning about first.

We started learning about what kinds of Fairtrade products there are sold in the Uk. We worked together to research these products. From our research we created our own shopping lists.

Some groups even used their mathematical skills and used the calculators to total up how much their shopping would cost.

In writing we also listened to the story of Pablo the Super Banana. We learned that Pablo made sure that all the farmers got the pay they deserved. We then wrote our own stories about Pablo.

Finally before our coffee morning we used Fairtrade chocolate to create Krispie cakes for our parents and carers to eat.

Author Visit

Yesterday marked the beginning of ‘World Book Week’. Primary 2 were very lucky to have received a visit from Coo Clayton, author of ‘Maggie’s Monsters’. She came in to read her new book to us and to do some arts and crafts activities. We loved the book and really enjoyed helping Maggie on the hunt for her monsters.

After we heard the story Coo challenged us to make our own binoculars just like Maggie had in the story. We worked together to help one another cello tape our binoculars together.

We then tested out our binoculars. Some of us made maps and went on a hunt for buried treasure.

Fairtrade Coffee Morning

All P2 pupils should now have received a letter regarding our Fairtrade Coffee Morning. If you have not received this letter please write a note in your child’s communication diary and we will get another to you, or see below:

This will be held in the gym hall this Friday  6th March at 9:45am – 10:30am.  Tea, Coffee and some Fairtrade snacks will be provided by P2, however to ensure a successful event we would be very grateful for any donations of biscuits or cakes.

Please return the tear of slip on the letter indicating if you wish to attend and how many.

Many Thanks,

Miss McFlynn and Miss Cathcart

Shrove Tuesday

Today we celebrated shrove Tuesday in class. We discussed why we celebrate shrove Tuesday and we also spoke about why tomorrow is a special day for us. The boys and girls were already very knowledgeable about Ash Wednesday and could tell me lots of facts about the day and Lent. We all wrote a promise in a cross that we aim to keep during Lent. Some of us promised to give up our favourite sweets whilst others promised to help more around the house.

Here are some pictures of us enjoying some yummy pancakes!

Numeracy in the classroom

This week the boys and girls have been learning lots of new concepts in numeracy. We have had a very successful week  developing lots of new skills.

Some of the boys and girls were revising their numbers to 20. We worked on ordering the numbers correctly and matching the words to digits.

Millie and Monroe were very interested in learning how to multiple. We learned that 2 x 4 is the same as 2 groups of 4 or 4 + 4. We also learned that when we multiple by 2 we are just doubling the number.

We also spent some of the week working on solving word problems. All pupils worked extremely hard together to solve each problem. We looked at words which meant add and words which meant subtract to work out what operation we needed to use to answer the question. Each pair then explained how they solved each word problem.

Ruan and Joshua worked hard together using the numicon to make the story of 10.

There were lots of number patterns and colour patterns made this week.

WE 21.2.20

Primary 2b have had a very busy week this week. There has been lots of independent learning happening in our atrium.

Some of the boys and girls built an amazing spaceship using the bricks and wooden planks.

In science this week we were learning about the states of water. We learned that water can come in 3 different states, solid, liquid and solid. We conducted a range of experiments to test how water can change from a solid into a liquid. We discovered that salt lowers the melting temperature of ice as it melted quicker than the ice without anything on it. We also discovered that the boiling water melted the ice much faster than hot air.

We then sorted pictures of water in different forms into solid, liquid and gas.

After that we watched the process of evaporation and condensation. Miss McFlynn boiled the melted ice in the kettle. We knew it was boiling when the steam started to come out of the top. Miss McFlynn then held a mirror over the steam and we watched at the steam cooled down it turned back into a liquid.

This week we have also been learning how to insert an image from the web into  google doc. Previously we have learned how to insert aa picture from the camera and insert a drawing.

Today we were very lucky to have experienced a little bit of Taekwondo. The boys and girls loved every minute of it as you can see below. All pupils have been issued with a leaflet which provides you with further information about the club on offer. Thank you to Hazel for coming.

Finally as today was world thinking day here are some of our pupils proudly showing off their uniform.
