Today we were visited by owls during our assembly. Margaret handled the owls. Shravan enjoyed the start, one of the owls spread its wings and looked like it was going to fly. Marcus learned that the owls had orange, black and yellow eyes. Jonathan found it interesting that owls are the only birds with eyes right at the front of their face so they don’t have a blindspot. Alexander Benson discovered owls have 10x stronger hearing than a dog. Alasdair remembered learning about an owl having two ears, one being at its jaw and one at its eye, and that it uses its hearing more than its sight. It was a very informative and exciting assembly, enjoyed by the whole class!

Each week you are also to learn five words that you have selected yourself with the spelling rule taught on Mondays. These will not be on spelling city. Instead practise the rule making your words using active strategies (writing words on a partners back to guess, make with pasta or play doh, rainbow writing, cheerleading the words etc…). You do not hand evidence of this in to school. It should be short, fun and engaging. You will complete a short dictation which uses words of a similar difficulty, though not the 5 specific words, which follow the spelling rule on Fridays.
Talking and Listening – At some point during the week please sit down with your family to discuss your use of technology. During this time you should share some of the discussions which arose through our Internet Safety questionnaire on Thursday (Which information you should share online, images – trustworthy sources, do they show the whole picture and permission to share others’ images, your ‘online reputation’ – controlling who views your images and comments, who may view them in future, how your posts from behind your screen can affect others and how others’ posts and comments affect you…). This is an opportunity for you to discuss anything which may have affected you, or people you know, with your family and to talk about what you would or could do if you were upset by something online. You could even come up wth a plan where you regularly share with an adult what you have been using your online time to view so that both they, and you know you are safe if you all wish and do not already have this in place. Having access to the internet requires trust and responsibilty, so try to be open and honest about what you do, and what you should do.
If you come up with any really good ideas that other families could use to help improve their internet safety we will be discussing these on Thursday during ICT.

Road Safety Competition
I have attached below the information which you will also have received through the Friday Bundle. If you wish toi submit an entry for the competition you are welcome to work on this over the holidays. You will also have the opportunity to complete this as your homework task for the first week back. Any entries should be brought in on Friday 25th October 2019., with your name, age, class and school on the reverse.

Literacy Additional Task – Access https://www.readtheory.org – Using your personal login and password please spend time this week reading and answering questions fo at least one passage.
Numeracy/Science – If possible this week (weather allowing) create a sundial outside your house. This is best completed on a sunny day. As modelled in school on Wednesday, you could return to the same spot throughout the day and mark your shadow line each hour, or you could push a stick onto soil and mark the shadow over the passing hours in a more inventive way .
CHALLENGE EXTENSION QUESTION – Does your shadow move around by the same angle each hour? If it did what angle should be there be between each hour line marked on the ground? Can you explain this?
If you are able to complete this task you can ‘hand in’ a photo on teams or just tell us what you did on Friday.
Electric Circuits with Our New Additions
Today two visitors came in the morning and joined us while we were doing our science work. They were the new girls who will be joining our class in a few weeks. They joined in during science. We were testing the circuits we had looked at last week to see if our predictions were right or wrong. We realised quite quickly when we actually made the circuit that diagrams without the battery symbol wouldn’t have any power. We also saw that two bulbs with one battery are dimmer than one bulb would be. The girls are twins and they were both lovely. We were all very excited to meet them and were happy when they were able to stay at break time too!

Developing Competitve Sports
This week in PE we applied our skills moving with and passing the ball and worked on increasing our awareness of team members and the opposition. In one activity we worked in pairs dribbling forward and shooting a basket then the opposition collected the ball from the rebound. In another we used a rugby ball and had to drive the ball forward through our area while the opposition tried to block us. When we successfully made it to our end line we passed to the next member of our team until we reached the end and scored a try. In our final activity we worked in teams of five, marking a member of the opposition who were trying to pass the ball five times to score a point. If we intercepted we tried to pass five times.
We realised when playing another team we have to be aware of where the person we are marking is, but also who has the ball and where it is going next. It is a lot to think about!
P6a Showed Racism the Red Card!
Unsurprisingly there was overwhelming support across Kirkhill during our ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ event where pupils wore items of red to show they would not tolerate racism of any kind. In P6a we had long red socks, red tops, hair bobbles, some even wore red from head to toe! In P6a we recognise that Everyone is Different and Everyone is the Same!

Math’s Week
This week is Math’s Week! We applied our numeracy and scientific skills when learning about light and shade. We went to the playground throughout Wednesday and drew a line to show the length and position of our shadows. We then measured the lines and the angles between each one. We sketched the movement of our shadows in class, again using a protractor to measure the angles. We then debated the reasons our shadows change in this way through the day.
Homework 23rd September – Due October 4th
Being numerate helps us to function responsibly in everyday life and contribute effectively to society. It increases our opportunities within the world of work and establishes foundations which can be built upon through lifelong learning. Numeracy is not only a subset of mathematics; it is also a life skill which permeates and supports all areas of learning, allowing young people access to the wider curriculum. (Education Scotland)
Monday 23rd September – Family Numeracy and Maths Homework Challenge
Families can choose one activity (or more if you wish) from the grid and work on this together over the next two weeks. How you record and share your homework is up to you! There are some suggestions on the grid but please feel free to be as inventive as you wish. This homework will last two weeks. On Friday 4th October, the eldest child in each family should bring in their family homework and the pupils will get a chance to share their activity with the school community. The homework should be carried out as a family and each activity can be simplified or extended to allow everyone to take part. There are lots of real life challenges to allow our pupils to see the benefit numeracy and maths has on our everyday life. These activities are designed to be fun, active and engaging for all our learners. It will not only promote their numeracy, but it will also develop their problem solving, creativity and collaboration skills.

Our Writing – The Best Day
On Wednesday, in writing, we were learning how to write a story using interesting openers and volcabuary. We walked around using our books and our imaginations, trying to think of different words or phrases to suit the titles on our group’s paper, and then moved to the next poster. We had lots of good ideas and used them to plan. Alexander E decided we should add using three interesting words in one of our descriptions to our success critereia. Next week we will be redrafting our stories and improving them using our success criteria and volcabuary pyramids.
