Amazingly Arty Climate Party

This week in Art we were creating climate change art. – Nicole

We were trying to create pictures to relate to climate change because COP26 is happening right now so it is very relevant. – Alexander

We tried to use at least 3 different medias. Media in art is the materials you would use and some are pens, pencils, acrylic paint and water colour paint. – Eilidh

Other materials we used were coloured pencils, tissue paper and fake leaves. – Roslyn

We could also choose to use crepe paper. – Isaac

My favourite media to use was the water colour paint. – Sam

My favourite media to use was a fine sharpie pen. – Lily-Anne

We had all had different opinions on our favourite medias to use but the majority really liked using acrylic paint.

P4/5 Fabulous Fashion Designers

In Art, we made clothes from paper, glue, feathers, string and cotton wool. – Matthew

We made clothes from different materials and we were trying to base the clothes on fashion through the 1900’s. – Ellis

Some people chose to do this in partners and some people were doing this themselves. – Isaac

My friend and I made the flapper dress and we used paper, feathers and cotton wool. We folded the paper like a fan to make the frills. We focused on fashion in the 1920’s. – Roslyn

Isaac and I were creating t-shirts from the 1980’s. To make it we both got big sheets of paper (I think A3) and we cut holes in the top of the sheets for our heads to go through. Then after we tested that they fitted us, we put them on the table and covered them in coloured feathers. – Finn

The art was based on our social studies topic in the 1900’s and we all made clothes from different decades in the 1900’s. I made a dress from the 1920’s with feathers at the bottom and little pieces of paper glues on to it. The bottom matched the top. – Lily-Anne

Amy and I were working on the 1940’s and we made a skirt and a t-shirt to go together. We put some feathers on it and hole punched the 2 sides at the front and back to put string round it to slide it on and off. – Carla

Here are some more pictures of some of us and our creations…

Melting Madness in the Wonderful, Wild Woodland

Last week in Woodland we made a tripod to melt some chocolate. – Lily-Anne

We collected 3 sticks, a tray and a coffee cup lid. First we got the 3 sticks and made it into a triangular shape and and tied the sticks at the top with string and put the sticks into mud. – Lily

In my group we firstly put a log in the middle and put 3 planks around it and tied it at the top with string. After that we put the chocolate on top of the log and then we tried to use the sunlight’s rays to make the chocolate melt. We did this using mirrors to reflect the sun’s rays onto the chocolate. – Arjun

I found it fun because we got use hot water to try and melt the chocolate with steam. – Olivia-Rose

Most groups managed to melt the chocolate and for those that didn’t, we tried really hard and got to eat it in the end anyway! – Roslyn

We have learnt that if you heat up a solid, it will become a liquid. – Amy

This is because the particles in the solid start to break apart when it is heated, becoming a liquid. – Joshua

Super Smart Scientists learning about Solids, Liquids and Gases

In Science we have started to learn about solids, liquids and gases. Solids are something that you can hold. – Amy

Solids are made up of tiny particles that are stuck together and can’t move around. – Maddison

Some examples of solids are bricks, spoons, water bottles and tables. – Eilidh

Liquids are something runny that you can’t hold. The particles are less tightly packed together and can move a little bit. – Finn

Some examples of liquids are water, juice and oil. – Nicole

Gases are like smoke and the particles are not close together so can move freely. – Isaac

Examples of gases are helium, oxygen, nitrogen, smoke and carbon dioxide  – Olivia-Rose, Matthew and Finn

Gases are something that you can inhale and exhale instead of eating and drinking. We played a game to help us. As a group we had to stand close together to pretend to be a solid, hold hands and stay close but move a bit to pretend to be a liquid and when we were gas particles we had to spread out around the room. – Alexander

We were being solid particles, standing closely together.

We were being gas particles, slightly further apart.

We were being gas particles, easily moving and spread out.

Friday 8th October

This week the Dedicated Decimals have been learning about symmetry.  We have been trying to create our own symmetrical patterns as well.

The Marvellous Multipliers have been learning the 4 times table and skip counting in 4.  We counted the corners of squares to practise doing this.

The Flawless Fractions have also been learning about symmetry.  We have been finding the lines of symmetry in different shapes.

We have all been creating our own maths and numeracy board games in groups.

In P.E we have been learning basketball with Mr. McMillan.  We have been developing our dribbling, passing, shooting, and rebound skills.  We also played games of basketball and worked on our team skills.

In French we have been learning how to say who is in our family.

In Science we have been learning about extinction and endangered species.

In Health and Well-being we drew a portrait of ourselves and wrote words to describe ourselves (positive and/ or negative).  We then asked our friends what they thought about us and we wrote these words down too.

Maths Week Scotland

This week was Maths Week Scotland. We were focusing on different types of jobs which involve maths.

At one group we were being an architect and the P4’s used squared paper and P5’s used blank paper to draw out a floor plan of a bungalow. – Amy

We were using maths in our floor plan because we had to use a ruler to measure out the rooms. – Maddison

We multiplied the length and breadth to work out what the area of each room was and and every cm we drew out was 1m. – Arjun

We were also pretending to be businessmen and women. We had to figure out when we were doing calls to other countries and write it on our schedule. We had to add on or take away in hours and tell the time to work out the time difference in other countries. – Ellis

The last station was to be a teacher and make our own maths lesson. The P5’s had to teach multiples or factors and the P4’s had to teach 3 times table multiplying or division. On our lesson plan we had to conclude a starter task, main task and a fast finisher. – Eilidh

3 people in our class got to teach their lesson including me, Finn and Subhan. Finn and I got to teach the P5 and Subhan got to teach the P4’s. It was really weird being the teacher and it was challenging to get everyone to listen. I enjoyed that I had the chance to experience these jobs so that I have future references if I want to do that job in the future. – Alexander

Super, Serious Science

In Science, we have been learning about vertebrates and invertebrates. Invertebrates are animals without a backbone such as a worm. – Amy

Other examples of invertebrates are snails, jellyfish and spiders. – Lily-Anne

A vertebrate is an animal with a backbone such as a fox. – Subhan

Other examples of vertebrates include a dog, monkey and a bear. – Ellis

Next week, we are going to explore different groups of animals and research different living conditions of vertebrates and invertebrates and their similarities and differences.

  Fish – vertebrate

  Giraffes – vertebrates

Puffer fish – vertebrates

Jellyfish – invertebrate

Jellyfish – invertebrate

Most of us have now finished our artwork from last week and we really enjoyed doing it. – Lily and Eilidh

Arty Party!

This week we started 2 big art projects. There are 2 projects we could choose from.  Most of us chose the Thandiwe Muiri artist and she is a photographer. In her artwork she has an abstract background and her models wore clothes with the same pattern and colour as the background. – Lily-Anne

5 people chose to recreate the Enfant Precoce artwork and his artwork is cartoon-y and unrealistic. Enfant uses weird shapes in his art. – Arjun

We had to draw characters and cut them out. These were weird and out of proportion.

We have been recreating our own patterns similar to those in photos. We are making background and capes/ vests. – Sam

Have a look at what P4/5 have created so far below. We are looking forward to showing you our final masterpieces next week!

Busy Bees’ Brilliant Blog

In P.E., we played basketball with Mr McMillan and we were learning how to pass the ball with chest passes and bounce passes. – Finn

We played basketball matches where we all had a partner to block. This helped us develop our defence skills. – Carla

In Maths, I have enjoyed making factor rainbows and factor trees. Factors are numbers which multiply together to make a number. – Alexander

In Numeracy and Maths the Flawless Fractions group have focused on revising the 6 and 7 times table. We can now multiply single and 2-digits. – Eilidh

This week we have focused on the 3 times table, using the numicons to help us. – Lily

We also practised the 2 times table. I now feel confident doubling and halving numbers. – Joey

I really enjoyed playing the roll and write game in maths this week. We used a dice to practice multiplying numbers. – Maddison

In Art and Social Studies we were focusing on different African artists. This week we looked at artwork by Enfant Precoce. We learned that he draws weird shapes and characters. The colours he uses are bright and bold. – Subhan

The pupils asked to study different African art and artists as part of our Africa topic this term. We will study 4 different artists including their background, style and techniques and describe the visual elements of tone, pattern, colour and line. We will self-assess against our success criteria once we have studied all 4 and try to replicate the style of some of their artwork with our own masterpieces.

In Literacy today, we were learning how to do joined up handwriting. It was tricky to begin with as this was the first time I did it but it got easier.  – Matthew

P4/5 were busy this afternoon (Friday) working in teams to complete a STEM challenge. They were challenged to communicate with their peers and show off their artistic flare to build a successful marble run. We all thought they were fantastic!

First Full Week of P4/5

This week in French we have been learning how to say classroom objects and furniture in French. One of our activities was to create labels of French words for the classroom objects and furniture and stick them next to that object. We also played games to help us learn the new French vocabulary.

In Language we were learning VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation). In groups we discussed different openers, punctuation, connectives and good vocab and then wrote different words on paper for our VCOP wall and attached it to our VCOP net.

In Social Studies we voted for our new topic. We chose Africa. We wrote down what we know about Africa already and what we want to know by asking questions. Many of use want to know about the language spoken in Africa, what foods they eat, what kind of animals live there, what they are famous for and their beliefs.
