Term 1 reflection blog

Welcome everyone to our Term 1 reflection blog.  Here are some of the views of pupils from P7b.

Jessica B : Term 1 was a blast! I loved looking at all the new subjects, being challenged a lot more across the curriculum . In maths calculating the APR rate was a challenge but I liked trying to figure out the answers also fractions it was confusing but I loved it. I liked looking at the global goals also looking at Greta Thunberg she was really inspiring I hope to continue with them.

Elise: Some highlight for me this term were safety in the park, science road show at BHS and maths week.  Let’s start with safety in the park. Safety in the park is a street safety program that teaches 10 – 12 years olds about how to be safe out and about in our community and some other fantastic activities. Some of my favourite activities were the drunk goggles and the road accident scene . Another highlight was maths week. I enjoyed researching about famous mathematicians like Einstein E=MC2 and newton the man who discovered how gravity works and the 3 laws of motion.

Renaska K : This term has gone so quick, I love being in p7! My favourite parts have been learning about the global goals and doing drama. I knew about climate change, but I didn’t really know about the green gas house effect and the global goals. It was so interesting! Drama was amazing we did lots of different scenarios. I was in a group with, Conner g, Grace, and Daisy, it was all so fun!

Grace
: In term 1 I became vice captain of Arthurlie I was surprise and shocked I thought I never would be it.  A few wee weeks later we were learning about famous mathematicians and we were to make a poster in our groups we moved around the classroom. Today a person came in and was talking to us about John Muir.  He was talking to us about plants and how they help us every day.  Term 1 was a blast!

Callum: In term 1 I became house captain of Arthurlie. We each did a speech infront of other P7s and P6s. We had a vote and I got the most votes, each Thursday me and my vice-captain collect house points to try and get the end of term reward. I am delighted that out of 4 groups we came second with over 1 thousand house points! Gateside won and got the pizza party in our class, so far I am loving P7 and doing DIY classroom and my teacher is the best!

Abbie: In term one we did P.E and boys from barrhed high school came and showed us some games. They also took control of some activities we had so much. we loved having the boys work with us they were also very nice and good at explaining the rules!  Term one has been so good, I can’t wait for term 2.

Alisha: This term has been a blast and we have learned so much.  My favourite had to be when we got into groups and of three or four to do drama.  One of the best parts was me and Olivia being aliens and we had to turn Cameron into an alien too.  This was so fun because we made an odd alien language that we all needed to speak it was so cool just like the fun games we played like swish and skoosh splat.  I have great fin and learned so much.

Tyler: At the start of the term we learned about landscapes and the features of them, then we worked on APR rate and finance in maths and I found I quite tricky but I feel like a I still improved a lot! During this time practised on drama specifically improve and we started to create our own scripts. Now we have recently been learning about The Global Goals along with Greta Thunberg (I particularly like this). All in all I have enjoyed term 1 a lot and am exited for next term!

Olivia: My highlights of the first term of primary7 are learning about the global goals.  It has been wonderful learning about climate change and learning about how I can help to make our planet healthy. Another thing is I have enjoyed about p7 is on a Thursday we always do drama which is so fun my favourite part of drama is the scenarios because we can express our self and do what we think is right. Another thing is safety in the park I liked learning things we wouldn’t usually learn about things we wouldn’t usually learn about . P.E was also so fun because wo were pushing ourselves to get fitter. The last thing I enjoyed was when me and my best friend got stuck outside which was so fun this year has definitely the best year I have ever had so far

Cameron: In term one we appointed house captains. Everyone from one team would stand up at the once close our eyes and vote by putting our hands up. The first topic was on global goals the global goals is the environmental society which is things that we can do to help the world so it doesn’t end within 80 years or so. We watched a 16 year old girl who left her country to go to the other side of the ocean to say a speech in front of the world leaders about global goals because the world leaders aren’t doing enough to try and save our planet.

Back to business…

Welcome to p7b’s class blog
Sorry it has taken a few weeks for our Weekly Blog team to get up and running.
Our first week back was a great adventure, we went to safety in the park. Safety in the park is a programme which teaches 10-12-year-olds about how to keep safe when we are not with our parents. We completed 11 different activities explaining how different occupations keep us away from, danger! We met Police Officers, Fire Fighters, Scottish Power employees and Community Officers. Here is what some of our p7’s thought.
Renaska: I found it very fun and entertaining as there was a lot of activities for us to do.
Connor G: It was a very enjoyable experience for me, and I would love to do it again.
Overall safety in the park was a very delightful experience for everyone in our class.

On our second week back, we had a vote on who we wanted our house captains to be. We had to write speeches if we wanted to run for house captain or vice-captain and then let our houses vote. P6 were able to join us in this, it was a test of our confidence, but the speeches were superb. Then on the Friday we had our first house assembly and found out who our house captains were? Here’s what our captains and vice captains think.
Grace: I was shocked when I got vice-captain of Arthurlie and I am loving the job so far!
Olivia: I felt chuffed and nervous about being vice-captain of Dealston and I love the job already.
Laurie: I like being vice-captain and it is already been amazing so far.
Tyler: I am very proud to be house captain of Grahamston.

On our third week we went to BHS for BAE science road show for the P7s that are going into S1 next year. It was about how phone calls travel to another phone and how sound and light waves work in the 21st century. We were in the hall with pupils from BHS, Cross Arthurlie and Carlibar. It was so interesting and great to be at the high school.

Maths
We have 3 math groups the classy calculators, division destroyers and the rockin’ rulercosters. The classy calculators have been working on finance, calculating APR rate and Exchanging money. The division destroyers have been working on place value with decimals. The rockin’ rulercoasters have been working on word problems and how to use the four number operations. Here is what some people think maths has been helping them with.
Renaska, classy calculators: It has helped me learn about more currencies. It has also helped me understand how to work with APR rate.
Riley, division destroyers: It has helped me understand how to work with decimals and place value.
Daisy, rockin’ rulercoasters: working on my maths has been helpful because it has helped me become more confident with multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.

Literacy
We are working in two groups at the moment. We have been writing letters to Mrs Black raising awareness of how our school could be more eco-friendly. We identified some issues we can see within the school and then wrote a letter explaining how we could fix the problems.
In social studies we have been learning all about the Global goals and how we, even though we are young, can make a difference to our planet. The Global Goals have been made to try and get everyone working together to make sure our fragile planet is well looked after and everyone in it is treated fairly and with respect. It links with our rights respecting school plan and is really interesting to learn about.
In health and wellbeing we have been leanring about resilience and how to be mindful even when times are tough. We have also been exploring fitness and have enjoyed having the BHS young leaders at our Wednesday sessions.
We have loads more to share but will do that next week.
Thanks for reading, we can’t wait to share our learning with you next week.

Easter 2019

This week we were learning about the Easter Story and the importance of learning the meaning behind Easter.

In summary, Jesus was named ‘The King of the Jews’ and the Jewish leaders did not like this so they arrested Jesus and beat him. This was because Judas betrayed him.

He was then sentenced to crucifixion because they claimed he committed blaspheme. He had to carry the cross up to Golgotha. The soldiers then ripped his clothes off and nailed him to the cross and spat on him. At this point, the sky turned black and the soldiers started to believe that Jesus really was the Son of God. Jesus died after 3 hours and his body was taken to a tomb by Joseph.

Three days later, Mary Magdalene and others went to visit Jesus’ tomb and realised it was empty! They thought his body had been stolen but an angel appeared and told them that Jesus had resurrected.  They knew that Jesus was alive and they knew where to find him.

To celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection, we went to St Andrews church for an Easter Service.

Introduction to our John Muir Journey

This term we have started learning about John Muir. John Muir is one of the most famous explorers and conservationists. John Muir was born in Dunbar, near Edinburgh in 1838. He became known for his fascination with nature and how to conserve it.  He introduced the concept of National Parks. These days, there is a charity named after John Muir called the John Muir Trust and various walks and paths in his name.

So far, to gain the John Muir Award we have:

  • conducted litter picks
  • created a portrait of John Muir
  • conducted a Tree Health Survey
  • created natural art using various pieces of nature from our school grounds
  • conducted a bird count
  • clear an area to help us conserve our grounds
  • worked with the Neilston Development Trust to plan various vegetables

We will be continuing to work towards gaining the John Muir Award and are looking forward to completing our journey!

Wild Life Posters

This week our writing focussed on structure and layout. We chose to write about a wild animal that we are interested in. We then chose to lay our writing out in poster form. We structured our writing under 4 subheadings:

  • Habitat
  • Diet
  • Physical Appearance
  • Interesting Facts

As part of our Big Talk homework, we researched our wild animals at home using our subheadings to help us. We then discussed our animals at home with our friends and family. In class, we discussed specialist vocabulary that we might want to use in our posters.

Here are some examples of our finished posters:

Beth’s poster on the Orangutan
Connor’s poster on the Koala
Renaska’s poster on the Hazel Dormouse
Abbie’s poster on the Meerkat
Beth’s poster on the Blue Tongued Skink

Safer Internet Day

The theme for Safer Internet Day was consent and we looked at lots of different scenarios involving consent on the internet.

We looked at different scripts for making a drama scene about having or giving consent to do things online.

The first scenario looked at two friends  who were taking selfies. One friend liked the selfie and wanted to post it in a group chat. The other did not want it posted however the friend posted it anyway. This resulted in a fall out and feelings being hurt. We felt that if the friend had asked the other friend for consent to post it then they would still be friends.

The next scenario looked at a group of four friends playing a zombie game online in a private group. One of the friends started to play a new game and met another player online. The friend invited the new player into the private group game without asking the other friends’ permission.  The group of friends wee angry that the friend had invited a stranger into the group without asking. They should have asked the group’s permission before inviting the player.

The third scenario looked at a child and the child’s mum. The child wanted a new version of his game and his mum was on the phone so the child decided not to ask for the game. The child bought the game anyway and cost the mum extra money. We felt the child should have waited until the mum was no longer on the phone to ask permission to buy the game.

Fact or Opinion? That is the question!

This week during Literacy we were learning to identify a fact and an opinion.

We now know that a fact is something that can be proven to be true and is backed up by evidence.

We now know that an opinion is something that can’t be proven to be true and some people can agree or disagree with it. This means it is subjective!

We took part in carousel activities to learn and practise how to identify a fact and opinion and justified our answers to our partners.

After that, we made our own Google Form Quizzes with several statements which were either fact or opinion. We shared our quizzes on our Google Classroom and our classmates were able to complete them .

Gymnastics

Welcome to our blog, we are now in term 3!

This week in PE we started learning gymnastics. We were learning to balance and do inversions.

Firstly, we had to stretch to make sure that we didn’t injure ourselves or pull a muscle.

Then, we took out floor mats and got ourselves into pairs. Some of us demonstrated some balances that we could work on or improve on. Some examples of balances were: V sit, shoulder stand, Y stand, arabesque and one leg stand.

After, we worked on inversions. Again some of us demonstrated our inversion skills. We worked on techniques such as cartwheels, round-offs, handstands, crabs/bridges and head stands.

Below you can see some  pictures of what some of us were able to do:

O

verall, we really feel as though we have already improved our skills and we are looking forward to learning more skills and techniques this term.

The Solar System

our science topic has been the Solar System this term. So far we have created posters, newspaper reports,  leaflets and power points during our writing. We were learning to create informative texts.

We used our newspaper reports about the first ever moon landing and we  changed them into a script for a news report. You can see some examples on our school Twitter. We also have been working on taking notes from a text. We watched informative videos on the planets and took  notes then created a mind map poster.

We have also made power points to share information about all of the 8 planets in our solar system.

During art, we created papier-mache planets using different sized balloons to try and make scaled down replicas.  We have not yet finished but we are well on our way to a classroom sized solar system.

Outdoor Classroom Day

On Thursday 1st of November we took part in Outdoor Classroom Day.

First we went on a nature walk to take pictures for our Digital Photography Competition. We took pictures of things like flowers, leaves, trees, clouds and rainbows. We then entered our photographs into the competition. You can see some of our entries below.

Next we collected materials from the school grounds that were natural. We then went into the outdoor classroom and created our own pieces of natural art. You can see some examples of our art below.
