National Children’s Day UK is all about the importance of a healthy childhood and how we need to protect the rights and freedoms of children in order to ensure that they can grow into happy, healthy adults.
East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure are marking national children’s day by hosting a showcase of local classes, activities and services for children in Barrhead Foundry. The day will feature free sample classes from Relax Kids, Baby sensory, Cheer Pom and Showcase stage school. Local author Lindsay Littleson will be visiting to read from her book The mixed up Summer of Lilly Mclean as well as a free book bug session for wee ones. The day will host Pedalwise ER a local initiative to encourage cycling to school and children are encouraged to bring along their bikes for a free safety check. Additionally we will have face painting bouncy castle and swimming for families ALL for free.
The Fair trade Committee have been busy continuing to promote Fair trade throughout the school. We organised a raffle with a wonderful prize donated by Sainsburys. This was won by Amy in P3a.
We also had a whole school competition to design a Fair trade Fantasy Fruit. The winners were P1- Charlotte
P2 and P3 – Sophie
P4 and P5 – Kiara
P6 and P7 – Kieran
All four children were delighted with their prize of a Fair trade Easter Egg.
Primary 4B and the Fair trade committee also ran a very successful pancake shop which raised over £130. The Fair trade committee used the money raised to pay for the Fair trade Speaker, who came in to speak to the whole school about Fair trade.
Amber, Luisa and Reagan went to a Fair trade workshop organised by the Scottish Fair trade Forum. The workshop focused on the Fair trade Cotton and they heard from Pamela, a woman who works in a cotton factory and has directly benefited from Fair trade cotton sales.
The school will close at 2.30pm on Friday 1st April for Spring Break and re-open on Monday 18th April.
May I take this opportunity to thank everyone associated with our school for your continued support and wish you a very happy Spring Break on behalf of everyone here at St Mark’s Primary School.
Gaining recognition for the wide range of achievements can increase pupil confidence, raise their aspirations, improve motivation for learning and keep them engaged in education. It is important that we recognise and celebrate achievements in all contexts for learning, through:
the ethos and life of the school as a community
curriculum areas and subjects
interdisciplinary learning
opportunities for personal achievement.
To help us gather this information on pupils’ personal achievements, I would ask you to follow the link below and provide the information required:
This link will remain live throughout session 2016. You can add achievements as often as required by entering your child’s name, class and details of their achievement.
On Monday 25th January at 1.45pm St Mark’s will be celebrating the birthday of our national hero, Robert Burns. On this day, school uniform should be worn however pupils are invited to wear something tartan eg. kilt, tie, scarf etc.

And in the words of the great man himself – “Dare to be honest and fear no labour”.
Class parties for Primary 1-7 will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday 22nd December. Pupils should wear their party clothes to school. No football strips please.
We hope all the P7 pupils, parent and carers are excited about our imminent trip to Lockerbie! The children will have a fantastic time meeting new friends, building relationships and learning lots of new skills.
Here are a few reminders, and answers to some questions raised over the course of this week:
Can we please ask parent/carers bring the children into school with their luggage on Monday at 9:10am. You should enter the building via the gym hall entrance.
Parents should bring along any medication their child will require during the trip. You will be asked to label and check you have filled out any medical permissions. If you believe your child may require Calpol or Paracetamol during the week, you must fill in a medical permission when you drop off your child at 9:10am.
Pupils can bring a hairdryer with them. If they are sharing a room with a friend, maybe they could discuss and agree on sharing hairdryers one between two. Straighteners should not be brought to Lockerbie.
Children can bring their own snacks. No fizzy drinks though. A tuck shop will be available each evening and £10 will be issued by the school to buy items over the course of the week.
No mobile phones. You can still keep in touch with how your child is getting on via the school twitter. Photos will be posted daily.
Remember to bring a black bag for dirty clothing.
Miss Flaherty will be in daily contact with the school. If there are any issues Miss Flaherty or the school will call you.
Children can bring denims to wear at the disco but should not wear them during the day activities.
Children do not need a lunch box. We are not participating in any activities that require one.
Girls can bring make-up. This can be worn to the disco.
You can come and wave the children off on Monday at 1:00pm if you are free to do so.
Please help your child practice rolling up and putting their sleeping bag in its bag. This will save a lot of time during the trip.
Please take the time to remind your child of the standard we expect from them during the trip. They are representing St Mark’s and we expect great manners, excellent listening skills and kindness throughout the week.
