National Children’s Day UK is all about the importance of a healthy childhood and how we need to protect the rights and freedoms of children in order to ensure that they can grow into happy, healthy adults.
East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure are marking national children’s day by hosting a showcase of local classes, activities and services for children in Barrhead Foundry. The day will feature free sample classes from Relax Kids, Baby sensory, Cheer Pom and Showcase stage school. Local author Lindsay Littleson will be visiting to read from her book The mixed up Summer of Lilly Mclean as well as a free book bug session for wee ones. The day will host Pedalwise ER a local initiative to encourage cycling to school and children are encouraged to bring along their bikes for a free safety check. Additionally we will have face painting bouncy castle and swimming for families ALL for free.
We hope all the P7 pupils, parent and carers are excited about our imminent trip to Lockerbie! The children will have a fantastic time meeting new friends, building relationships and learning lots of new skills.
Here are a few reminders, and answers to some questions raised over the course of this week:
Can we please ask parent/carers bring the children into school with their luggage on Monday at 9:10am. You should enter the building via the gym hall entrance.
Parents should bring along any medication their child will require during the trip. You will be asked to label and check you have filled out any medical permissions. If you believe your child may require Calpol or Paracetamol during the week, you must fill in a medical permission when you drop off your child at 9:10am.
Pupils can bring a hairdryer with them. If they are sharing a room with a friend, maybe they could discuss and agree on sharing hairdryers one between two. Straighteners should not be brought to Lockerbie.
Children can bring their own snacks. No fizzy drinks though. A tuck shop will be available each evening and £10 will be issued by the school to buy items over the course of the week.
No mobile phones. You can still keep in touch with how your child is getting on via the school twitter. Photos will be posted daily.
Remember to bring a black bag for dirty clothing.
Miss Flaherty will be in daily contact with the school. If there are any issues Miss Flaherty or the school will call you.
Children can bring denims to wear at the disco but should not wear them during the day activities.
Children do not need a lunch box. We are not participating in any activities that require one.
Girls can bring make-up. This can be worn to the disco.
You can come and wave the children off on Monday at 1:00pm if you are free to do so.
Please help your child practice rolling up and putting their sleeping bag in its bag. This will save a lot of time during the trip.
Please take the time to remind your child of the standard we expect from them during the trip. They are representing St Mark’s and we expect great manners, excellent listening skills and kindness throughout the week.
Well done to St Mark’s Primary 7 children who participated in the Badminton Competition at Springhill and Auchenback Primary School today. They demonstrated excellent net play, footwork and drop shots.

Our health week is now in full swing and the children have been enjoying an exciting and busy week filled with a variety of activities .
Each class will benefit from a host of sports lessons provided by professional coaches. These will include golf, tennis, rugby, badminton, judo and much more. Children should bring their PE kit and a water bottle each day to school.
Our annual Sports Day led by our active schools coordinator will take place on Friday 19th June (weather permitting) in the school grounds at the following times:
St Mark’s participated in Brake’s Giant Walk to raise awareness of road safety We were joined by parents, the police, ambulance crew and the fire brigade. The children showed their banners and posters as they marched to the Main Street. The school was joined by St John’s and then continued the walk to Cowan Park where Pulse FM provided music and Tesco generously offered every child a snack and drink.
You can hear our BBC Radio Scotland interview by following the link below. The interview begins at 2:25:30
A Note from St Mark’s Junior Road Safety Officers:
“We have enjoyed planning and taking part in the Giant Brake Walk this year. During the walk we handed out leaflets promoting road safety and collecting donations for the charity Brake. We enjoyed speaking to members of the community about road safety and joining up with St John’s. Once we had arrived back in school we counted the money and we raised a total of donations which was £33.22. Tesco also gave us some food and drinks, so we are very grateful for that.”
Every year Living Streets’ Walk to School Week brings together nearly one million schoolchildren, teachers and parents. Each day of Walk to School Week will explore a different health benefit of walking to school.
Daily exercise keeps us fit and healthy. Walking is good for our hearts, lungs, muscles and bones.
Children that walk to school arrive more alert and ready to start the day. Walking can also have a positive effect on your mood.
Getting into the habit of an energetic walk at the start of the day can also encourage healthy eating habits such as having a nutritious breakfast every morning.
The whole family can get fit walking to school. It’s also a great time to spend quality time together and chat about your day.
Gas from cars pollutes the air. If more people walk, there will be fewer cars and less pollution. Cleaner air is better for us and our planet.
