For every day you are not in school, choose a feature article from a newspaper(broadsheet) and apply the following questions.

1.  Examine the title and identify the language techniques (e.g. alliteration, pun, imagery etc.) used to attract  the        reader’s attention.

2. Use a dictionary to find the meaning of any words with which you are unfamiliar. Keep a

note of the words and meanings.

Explain how the context might help you to arrive at the meaning.

3.   Summarise the article/extract/report very briefly. Outline the stages in the argument. List the key ideas it presents.

  1. Take note of any feature of sentence structure that you feel add significance to any part of the passage. You must say not only what the writer has done that is unusual in terms of the way the sentences are put together but also explain the effect.

5.  Identify a linking sentence. Write it down and use the link strategy to explain how it moves forward the writer’s line of     thought from one topic to another.

6.Take a note of any words or phrases which are interesting or unusual.

Choose at least two examples of loaded language i.e. where word choice adds significantly to the writer’s meaning. Analyse the impact of these words.

  1. Choose two examples of imagery. Analyse these images. (Remember – Just as … so too).

  1. Identify the tone of the passage or a section of the passage. (Sarcastic/humorous/critical etc.)

Select key words or phrases which reveal this tone and explain how these do so.

  1. Say what the writer’s purpose was in writing this article (e.g. to entertain, persuade, inform etc.). Explain how successful you think the writer has been in conveying his/her purpose

10.  Choose one stylistic technique which is particularly effective and explain why it is effective.
