Farewell Mark…

We are having to say farewell to Mark Brotherton who has been a Trainee with us for 2 years while he studied on the MSc course at Strathclyde. Mark has been successful in securing a job in East Ayrshire for his probationary year. He will still be working with us while he completes his research which was carried out in the area of looked after children in East Renfrewshire and has already gathered really useful information for the authority. We wish Mark well in his career as a psychologist.

Understanding Child and Teenage Behaviour

The Psychological Service have been running workshops for parents in the authority for a number of years with great success. Some parents that attended last year commented that it was “good to hear from other parents who are in the same position as yourself” and the athmosphere was “relaxed and friendly”.

Other comments included:

“superb insight with simple, yet effective techniques and strategies to improve our parenting skills”

“Very enjoyable course, would recommend it to friends.  Look forward to doing the next course in a few years!”

“I found the information in the course really helpful and our home is a calmer place since I started the course”

This year the evenings will be held from 7-9pm in Caroleside Primary School on the following 5 dates:

Family Support Programme

 

This service, based at Daldorch House School in Catrine, aims to support families of children with a diagnosis (or awaiting diagnosis) of Autism up to the age of 19 years. This service runs a 3 step support programme including a telephone hotline, seminars and 1:1 support for families. For more information please Click Here to view the flyer.

Staffing Changes

As you will maybe be aware we have had to say a very sad farewell to Sarah Jamieson who was one of our Educational Psychologists. We wish her all the best in her new job in Shetland!

We are pleased to announce that Chris Atherton has been promoted from a Maingrade to a Senior Psychologist, and Jennifer Hunter is now with us as a Maingrade Psychologist! We also will be giving a warm welcome back to Eilidh Lanzani and Ainsley McGoldrick from maternity leave!

Building Resilience to Stress

The Psychological Service produced a booklet on Building Resilience to Stress. The booklet contains information on stress, resilience and a range of different management techniques e.g relaxation strategies.

ASN and Disability Parents’ Conference

The Psychological Service will be at the ASN and Disability Parents’ Conference which will be held at The Isobel Mair School and Family Centre on Saturday 26th May 2012.

The conference has a number of workshops available for parents including:

  • Helping Your Child Access Out of School Experiences- Marianne Sermanni, Team Manager
  • Making the Most of Meetings- Sandra Mitchell, RESOLVE

Parent Workshops

The first of 5 parent workshops took place on Tuesday and was a great success! Around 40 parents attended and we look forward to welcoming even more parents next Tuesday!

Parenting Workshops

The Psychological Service will be running parenting workshops every Tuesday in May beginning on the 1st. The groups will meet in St John’s Primary School from 7-9pm.  It is a great opportunity to improve your skills amd relationships and meet other parents.

There are 3 groups to choose from:
Pre School- 0-6 years
Primary- 6-12 years
Teenage- 13+

Latest Research Summary

Two of the Educational Psychologists, Gillian Cross and Mardi Alexander carried out reseach in Isobel Mair School, the Authority’s school for children with severe and complex needs. The research looked at introducing and evaluating the ‘Learning to speak their language’ approach. Follow this link to read their research summary.
