MARYS MEALS BACKPACK APPEAL
Mary’s Meals Backpack Appeal is a project that supports children in third world countries. Most of the children who benefit from Mary’s Meals and the Backpack Project have suffered war, poverty, famine, or natural disaster. Very often families cannot afford to buy basic things like pencils and copy books, or even suitable clothes for their children to wear to school. Therefore children miss out on school and an education.
A simple backpack with educational materials can be a lifeline to these children as studies show that an education is the best way a chronically poor child can escape poverty in later life.
We as a school have been supporting this project for several years and we need your help to make this appeal just as successful as it has been in recent years. Many events have been planned to help advertise and educate pupils and staff on this important matter.
We carried out a bake sale on Friday 16th December to help raise money towards this fund. Altogether we raised £81.71 and we thank all pupils and staff who helped us raise this money for such a worthy cause. Hopefully we will have another bake sake in the spring time.
Lessons are planned to help educate the younger pupils on this important topic, and the S1 pupils will also have a speaker from the Marys Meals Project to speak to them at assembly. We also have a notice board with information informing pupils and staff on the Backpack Appeal.
Also all those who bring in a filled backpack will be entered into a free prize draw to win a £50 Silverburn shopping voucher!
What the Backpack means to a child in Africa
There are 300 million chronically hungry children in the world – most do not go to school. Research shows that basic education is the single most effective way of escaping the poverty trap, and the Backpack Project provides basic school items enabling children to attend school and learn. Mary’s Meals and the Backpack Project are proving to be a simple solution to world hunger.
