Head Teacher, Hazeldene Family Centre
I am delighted to be able to share with you that following interviews on 7th October, Mr. Justin Beck has been appointed as the new head teacher for Hazeldene Family Centre. Justin has a wealth of experience in Early Learning and Childcare and previously has been a Teaching Fellow on the BA in Childhood Practice and Early Years Pedagogue Masters programmes at University of Strathclyde. We look forward to welcoming him and wish him every success as he takes up his new post.
I wish to thank all children, families, staff and local authority colleagues for the good wishes and the beautiful gifts you have kindly given to me. I shall treasure them and my memories of happy years at Hazeldene. I am confident that the family centre will continue to flourish and go from strength to strength under the leadership of the new head teacher. I will miss you all but am looking forward to many happy years with my family and friends in my retirement. Wishing you all the very best for the future.

We are very grateful to have received a grant of £5050.56 from the Community Climate Asset Fund to purchase raised beds, mini green houses, a variety of planters, tool store and gardening equipment to grow fruit and vegetables in the family centre garden. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the family centre is currently open only for key worker families or vulnerable children. We are sharing lots of ideas for home learning on the home learning page and through our Twitter feed. Staff are contacting families via regular phone calls to keep in touch and find out if any support is required.

Hazeldene Family Centre have been awarded a grant of £5050.56 from the Scottish Government’s Community Climate Asset Fund, for garden equipment, mini greenhouses, planters, soil and seeds to help the to reduce local carbon emissions through growing our own fruit and vegetables.
The CCAF is a Scottish Government fund, administered by Keep Scotland Beautiful, and 279 community-based organisations from across Scotland have been awarded more than £3.2 million of funding to tackle climate change. Further details from www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/ccaf

Parent Club, the national organisation behind the Baby Box, have produced helpful leaflets to answer some questions about how nurseries across Scotland are working to keep everyone safe during the Coronavirus. Play Scotland and Save the Children have produced a helpful Play Well pack, which is packed full of suggestions, ideas and tips to support your child’s play and learning at home. There are games and activities designed for children aged three to six. These can easily be changed to suit younger or older children too.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming back our returning children on 12th August. This session we will also be welcoming some of the children and staff from Crookfur Nursery for a few months, while they are waiting for their new building to be completed.
We are also looking forward to meeting our new children and families. Each family should have received an individual email with details of their child’s start date/time and attendance pattern. If you have any enquiries, please contact

We have returned to the Family Centre in small groups to help support the children’s transition to Primary 1. We have been busy preparing Recovery Plans for the children returning in August and new children starting.

Due to COVID-19 and the need for physical distancing , we are following instructions from the government to relocate temporarily to a central hub from Monday, 23rd March. We will be based in Calderwood Lodge nursery. We have contacted the families of children we are able to accommodate. Please help to keep everyone safe by not coming to the hub if your child is not attending. We can be contacted through email:

Schools close at 5 p.m. on Friday 20th March. Please make arrangements to collect your child by 5 p.m. if they normally attend till 6 p.m. on a Friday.
Following today’s announcement by the Scottish Government about support that will be in place for some families, we are currently working on our plans and will be in touch directly with those families.

The Scottish Government has announced schools and nurseries across Scotland will close at the end of the school day this Friday (20 March) – we are working on plans to put in place to support families and will announce these as soon as we can.

Due to the poor weather, we have decided to postpone Sports Day which was planned for tomorrow. The alternative date is 20th June, so hopefully the weather will be better then.

Digital Learning Workshop
Thank you to the parents who attended the workshops this morning and this evening. Thank you to Miss Bolton and Karen-Ann McSwiggan (Digital Schools Officer for East Renfrewshire) for making the presentation and for demonstrating the toys.
There was lots of helpful information shared about keeping children safe online and helping them to learn with an through digital technologies.
It has been agreed that we can share the presentation with all families so that you can explore the links on your own device.

Childhood Flu Vaccination Programme 2018 – 19
The NHS offer vaccination to all primary school children. Vaccine uptake rates confirm that the fourth year of the programme has been extremely successful with around 73% of primary school children vaccinated last year (maintaining the high level of uptake seen in 2017 – 18). These high uptake rates confirm that the programme is now a well-established part of the routine childhood vaccination programme.
This year’s programme will be the same as previously, i.e. children aged 2-5 years and not yet in school will be vaccinated at their GP, and primary school children will be vaccinated at school.

Staff Changes
Judith Dougal, one of our Depute Heads of Centre, will be leaving us on 23rd July, to take up a post as Early Years Graduate with Highland Council. I’m sure you will join with me in congratulating Judith and wishing her every success in her new post. Thank you to Judith for her hard work during her time at Hazeldene. We will miss her excellent organisation skills and her expertise in outdoor learning, but she has left a strong legacy in the staff team.
We are in the process of recruiting three Early Years Support Workers to work alongside our Child Development Officers in the playrooms. We will also be recruiting another full-time staff member and are keen to hear your views on the qualities you look for in someone who will be supporting your child’s learning and development.
I wish you all an enjoyable summer, whether your child is attending our highly successful Holiday Provision or you are out and about enjoying the Scottish countryside – or more exotic places. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on 15th August.

Moving towards 1140 hours of free early learning and childcare
The first phase of the Council’s approach to increasing free early learning and childcare provision across the area will be introduced at four nurseries in August. Local authorities currently provide 600 free hours a year for all three and four-year-olds and eligible two-year-olds. As part of changes being introduced by the Scottish Government, this will increase to 1,140 hours by 2020.

The children have been having lots of fun at their Easter Parade today. Happy Holidays to those who are stopping for the break and enjoy the Holiday Provision for those who will be coming along.

World Book Day
Children are invited to bring their favourite book on Friday 9th March to celebrate World Book Day Please remember to put your child’s name on their book.
The children will also be enjoying a fun Strictly Come Dancing day on Friday, in aid of the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice. We will be collecting at the door if you wish to make a donation.

The children are enjoying a fun learning day here in Hazeldene.
Road conditions remain difficult, but the Roads team are working hard to get everything clear and safe, particularly around schools and nurseries.

Deep snow this morning at Hazeldene. Four staff have made it in so far and one parent is Staying to Play. Other staff are walking in and will be here a.s.a.p.. We need to prioritise working families this morning, so will be very grateful for your patience and understanding.
Information from the Local Authority:
This morning’s unexpected and sudden change in weather has caused a number of issues. Schools and early learning establishments remain open, albeit with reduced staffing which is being managed locally to ensure adequate supervision of children and young people until staffing levels return to normal.
The weather issues have been aggravated by a number of accidents (M77, Eaglesham and Newton Mearns). We expect roads to clear soon and are monitoring the situation closely, notably with a view to ensuring staff and pupils get home safely. However at present all establishments will remain open.
5th March
Visits to the woods today are cancelled, due to the recent severe weather. We will risk assess and let you know if the rest of the planned visits will go ahead this week.
4th March
All East Renfrewshire schools and nurseries will re-open tomorrow.
Janitors and road teams have worked hard to clear access routes and paths as much as possible, but with further cold weather expected tonight, families are advised to take care.
2nd March 2018
It is expected that all East Renfrewshire Council schools and nurseries will open on Monday as normal.
The Council will provide updates on their Twitter feed and website if the weather deteriorates over the weekend.

All East Renfrewshire Council schools and nurseries will remain closed tomorrow (Friday 2nd March). This is due to the Amber weather warning being extended and dangerous conditions persisting on local roads.
The weather is expected to improve over the weekend and it is hoped that we will be able to open again on Monday, but please check the council website www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk which will be updated over the weekend.

Heavy snow has started to fall and the roads are quickly being covered. Parents are reporting that road conditions are extremely difficult at the top of Mearns Road.

Weather report :
Clusters of heavy, slow moving snow showers expected, giving 1-2 hours of continuous snow, with drier periods in between. Snow accumulations of up to 5cm likely at lower levels, with the potential for 10cm above 150m. Up to 20-30cm of snow over highest routes.
16th January, 2018. Please be aware that several parents have reported that the road conditions around the Family Centre are very difficult this afternoon. Snow is expected to continue this evening and tomorrow. Please allow extra time for travelling and take care on/ near the roads.

20th Anniversary Celebrations
We will be hosting an Open Day on Wednesday, 6th December, to celebrate 20 years since our official opening.
Former children, current and former parents and colleagues are invited to drop in between 9.30 – 11.30 a.m. , 1.30 – 3.30 p.m. or 4.15 – 4.45 p.m.
