Highlights of the week!

It has been another hard working week in Primary 3a. We have compiled a list below explaining what our highlight of the week has been.

“I liked doing sewing, I’m practising how to cross stitch a shape.” (Emma)

“My highlight of the week was making shadow puppets to act out the story of Diwali.” (Oscar)

“My highlight has been sewing. I’ve planned my design on dotty paper and I am making my coaster to take home.” (Cole)

“My highlight has also been sewing. I’m making my real design after practising. I’ve managed to stitch a triangle, straight line and the letter ‘L’.” (Cara)

“I liked making shadow puppets. We acted out the story using the whiteboard to make our shadows.” (Ayla)

“I also liked making the shadow puppets. It was funny when one of our characters got accidentally squashed!” (Louis)

“My favourite part of the week has been making a fraction wall on the computer. I discovered that you need twohalves to make a whole and three thirds to make a whole and so on.” (Sam)

“I liked completing a drawing to invite members of the council to the school over Christmas.” (Alexander)

“I liked drawing our Christmas cards to give to the council, as an invitation.” (Eilidh)

“I enjoyed finishing my persuasive poster. I made one called ‘Mega marshmallow’ when you suck it, it gets bigger and bigger.” (Kai)

“I enjoyed doing sewing. I’m about to start my design, just now I am planning and drawing an ice-skate.” (Lauren)

“I enjoyed practising multiplication by completing a colouring task. We had to work out the answer and colour the box in the colour that matched the answer.” (Chloe)

“I liked doing greater than and less than work. We looked at numbers up to 100 and had to choose if they were bigger or smaller than another number.” (Aliyah)

“I enjoyed doing sewing. I’m planning my design, so far I have stitched a circle and the letter ‘T’.” (Muskaan)

“I liked reading ‘The Big Snowball’ my favourite characters were the two dragons because they were little.” (Mhairi)

“I liked doing different stations for maths. I liked using the Beebots to direct them around the town and space. I made them turn left and right through a right angle.” (Eleya)

“I liked doing maths. We looked at exchanging. I know that you can make the number 73 by using 7 tens and 3 units or 6 tens and 13 units.” (Rosie)

“I liked doing tiling and completing my stained glass window. We traced over our designs with special pens and put them on the window. They look nice!” (Amrit)

“I liked doing different stations for maths learning about angles and directions. My favourite one using the alphabet mat to direct people to the letters in their name.” (Eesa)

“I liked doing sewing. I have sewn the letter ‘H’ and planned my real design. I’m finding it much easier now we have practised.” (Maryam)

“I have liked doing my persuasive poster. The name of my bar is ‘Foot Choc’ and when you eat it lots of footballs magically appear in your garden!” (Lewis)

“I liked making and using my right angle checker. I turned it into an acute angle by folding it to make it smaller.” (Cameron)

“I liked doing the sewing. I’m now on to my real design after planning. I’ve managed to do a straight line and a rectangle and the letter ‘L’.” (Ryan)

“I liked doing sewing. I’m on to my planning page where I am planning my coaster. I think I am going to try and sew my name.” (Calum)

“I liked doing maths this week. I liked doing 27 – 18 so since you can’t do 7 take away ten. You need to make 17 and do that take away which equals 9. Then you have 1 ten. 1 take away 1 is zero so my answer would be 9.” (Ethan)

We hope you all have a good weekend and check in with us again next week to see what else we have bee  up to.

World Book Week

After receiving our Read, Write, Count bags on Monday, Primary 3a have begun using some of the wonderful materials inside at home.

“I have used the cards with my mum. We have made some addition and subtraction calculations.” (Lauren)

“I have read ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. I liked the bit where the yellow and the orange crayon had an argument.” (Emma)

“I have read ‘Gigantasaurus’ and my favourite part was when Gigantasaurus comes and the little dinosaurs think their friend has been eaten up!” (Eleya)

Throughout the week we have completed a range of activities to help us celebrate World Book Week. On Monday we spent some time looking at different books that people had brought in as part of their costume. We all now have a list of new books that we would like to read in the future.

img_6124 img_6125 img_6126

On Tuesday we completed a scavenger hunt using a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.

“We were given different books and had to look inside to find different things like a witch, train or a character shouting. We used our skimming and scanning skills to help us find either a word or picture of the object.” (Ryan and Cara)

img_6148 img_6150 img_6152 img_6155 img_6159

“I remembered how to skim and scan well. When you skim a book you are looking through it quickly to get an idea about what the book is about. When you scan a book you are looking for a certain piece of information like a particular word.” (Maryam, Cameron, Ethan)

img_6160

“Afterwards, we completed a book quiz where we had to answer questions about popular books, authors and books which had been turned into films.” (Ayla)

Over the last few weeks we have been reading ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ as our class novel. World Book Week provided us with the perfect opportunity to delve into Willy Wonka’s world and complete some activities related to the book.

“We have been designing our own magical chocolate bars. I made one that when you bite into it sugar bursts out of it and goes on your tongue!” (Kai)

“When you eat my ice lolly there is a different flavour for each colour and each part tastes different.” (Eilidh)

“My chocolate bar can be driven around your mouth and drops tasty pieces of caramel in your teeth. When you want it to stop you crush it between your teeth!” (Sam)

img_6113

After making our mouths water with all these fantastic ideas we decided to create persuasive adverts encouraging Mr Wonka to make our delicious sweets!

“We have used rhyme, alliteration, positive language and rhetorical questions to make people want to buy our chocolate bar.” (Chloe)

img_6181 img_6184

It is not just in class that we have been embracing World Book Week, as you can see below we have all worked really hard on our homework activities to either make a potato book character or take a picture of ourselves reading somewhere unusual!

Read, Write, Count – Book Week

Primary 3 were the lucky recipients of their very own Read, Write, Count Bags today. After having a look at the wonderful items inside the bag, we are very excited to complete some of the activities mentioned in the information leaflet and can’t wait to read ‘Gigantosaurus’ and ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’.

img_6147

Before receiving their bag of goodies Primary 3 were set a task to find their own ‘Golden Ticket’ to swap for a bag!

“We went outside and had a treasure hunt to find different cards. On one card there was the title of a book and on another there was a matching character from the book. We had to find a card and then find a partner who had the matching title or character. If we managed to find a ‘Golden Ticket’ and the correct partner we got to take the bags home!” (Eilidh, Chloe, Muskaan and Eleya)

img_6135 img_6134 img_6133 img_6132 img_6130 img_6129

Thankfully, with a little team work, and some thorough searching, we were able to find and match all of the tickets correctly. img_6146 img_6143 img_6142

“I loved having to find the cards and matching them with a partner – it was such a fun way to get our bags!” (Oscar)

“I liked having to find the cards –I found mine behind the bin!!” (Ryan)

“I liked having to match the cards with a partner – this was quite tricky but luckily we did it!” (Chloe)

“I liked having to work as a team to find and match the cards.” (Maryam)

“I was lucky and spotted a ticket straight away!” (Kai)

After all this excitement we are really looking forward to using all of the materials inside the bag and can’t wait to show them off to our families at home!

18th November 2016

Primary 3a have been working very hard during maths time this week. Yoda have been learning about fractions.

“A fraction is where something is split into equal parts.” (Alexander)

“Fractions and division are also linked because you are sharing something equally.” (Cole)

“We have been learning about numerators and denominators. The numerator goes on the top of the fraction and the denominator goes on the bottom. A way to help you remember this is upstairs numerator and Downstairs Denominator.” (Louis)

“The denominator tells you how many sections the whole has been divided into and the numerator tells you how many equal parts you actually have.” (Oscar)

img_6101

img_6102

Yoda have been using their knowledge of fractions to complete lots of game stations this week including playing bingo, loop cards and a memory game.

BB8 have also started looking at tiling 2D shapes.

“Tiling is when you join 2D shapes together with no gaps or overlaps.” (Cara)

We have been experimenting with tiling by using a range of materials and strategies to discover which shapes tiles.

“We have tried to join 2D plastic shapes together, traced around the shapes, cut out the shapes and tried to stick them together and drawn tiling patterns on dotty paper.” (Eilidh)

img_6100img_6099

After all our experimenting we have discovered that squares, rectangles, triangles, hexagons, parallelograms, diamonds, trapeziums and hexagons will all tile on their own. However, circles, semi-circles, octagons and pentagons will not.

We are all very excited to use our knowledge of tiling to design our own stained glass windows – keep your eyes peeled for our creations!

Kylo Ren have been applying their knowledge of addition and subtraction to help them solve problems involving money.

“We have been using different strategies to help us solve the problems. We have used coins to help us and 100 squares and also writing the calculation.” (Lauren)

Rey have been continuing to work hard focusing on rounding numbers to the nearest ten and investigating whether numbers are greater than or less than a different number.

“I have liked doing the different stations.” (Aliyah)

I have enjoyed using a 100 square to help me round to the nearest ten.” (Amy)

During P.E. this week we have been learning how to work effectively as a team during different games. We have also had to apply these skills during our language work. We have been using word banks and brainstorming ideas to create lists of interesting adjectives to describe a variety of nouns.

img_6098img_6097img_6095During RME we have been learning about Rangoli patterns with Mrs McGuigan.

“Rangoli patterns use all different shapes and colours. They are usually found outside of a front door.” (Sam)

We have been exploring the visual element of line this week by completing our own line drawing of a space shuttle.

“We were given a piece of paper with half a space shuttle on it and we had to draw the other side. We had to use some maths skills too by making sure it was symmetrical and measuring with a ruler to try and make sure both sides were the same size.” (Eleya)

Finally, Primary 3 have begun to learn how to cross stitch. We will be working on this skill over the next few weeks. Although we found it difficult we all showed wonderful concentration and perseverance to thread our needle and create our first stitch. We are excited to show you all our hard work over the next few weeks.

11th November 2016

It has been another busy week for us here in Primary 3a! In maths Yoda and BB8 have been working together learning how to divide and multiply larger 2 and 3 digit numbers.

“Division is a bit different to multiplication, addition and subtraction. When you multiply, add or subtract you always have to start with the units column but when you are dividing bigger numbers you need to start in largest column like the hundreds or tens and leave the units until the end.”  (Eilidh)

Kylo Ren have been learning how to subtract with exchanging and using their tens and units to help them.

“I’ve learned that if you don’t have enough units for the calculation you need to take away 1 ten and swap it for 10 units. You can do this because 1 ten is exactly the same as 10 units.” (Lauren)

During our language work this week we have been working together to learn about inferential and think and search questions. We have completed lots of activities on this but our favourite was ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ quiz – we all did so well that we are now worth a lot of money!!

“Think and search questions are different from right there questions. Right there questions the answer is always in the text – you just need to find it! But with think and search questions you have to think about the question and use clues from the text or your own knowledge to help you.” (Darcey)

We have been extremely busy working on our topic of the Sun, Moon and Stars this week. On Monday we made models to show us what role the Earth, sun and moon play in our solar system.

“It shows us the sun stays still and doesn’t move whilst the Earth orbits the sun and also rotates. It also shows us how the moon orbits and rotates around the Earth.” (Muskaan)

We have also been learning about the different phases of the moon and made a diagram showing how the moon changes in our night sky.

“You might see a gibbous, crescent, full moon, new moon or half moon.” (Cara)

“You can also say the phases of moon are waxing or waning. Waning means the moon is getting smaller and waxing means it is getting bigger. Last night I saw a waxing gibbous.” (Cole)

Since we have been learning so much about the sun, moon and stars we decided to turn ourselves into astronauts!

“We used paper plated and cut out the middle circle and wrapped the outside in tin foil. We then drew our faces on a piece of paper and cut our faces out and glued them to the inside of the helmet. We all look like real astronauts now!” (Chloe)

img_6091

Of course, all astronauts need the best transport to visit the moon or space so we have also been designing and making our own rockets to get us there that little bit faster! We researched different space shuttles and took some of the ideas we saw, along with our imagination, to make our own.

“We have been making some rockets out of construction. We had to use choose what material to make it out of and use lots of team work to build our rocket.Ours had a place for the astronauts to sleep, a booster and a launch pad.” (Ryan)

Louis, Ryan, Lauren and Eilidh show us their rocket - complete with launch pad, water cooling system and comfortable seating!

Alexander, Cameron and Maryam have worked hard to create their wonderful rocket with detachable launch pad and super fuel cells!

After all our hard work we are all in need of a relaxing weekend – we hope you have one too!
