EWHCF Class of 2021

11th November 2016

It has been another busy week for us here in Primary 3a! In maths Yoda and BB8 have been working together learning how to divide and multiply larger 2 and 3 digit numbers.

“Division is a bit different to multiplication, addition and subtraction. When you multiply, add or subtract you always have to start with the units column but when you are dividing bigger numbers you need to start in largest column like the hundreds or tens and leave the units until the end.”  (Eilidh)

Kylo Ren have been learning how to subtract with exchanging and using their tens and units to help them.

“I’ve learned that if you don’t have enough units for the calculation you need to take away 1 ten and swap it for 10 units. You can do this because 1 ten is exactly the same as 10 units.” (Lauren)

During our language work this week we have been working together to learn about inferential and think and search questions. We have completed lots of activities on this but our favourite was ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ quiz – we all did so well that we are now worth a lot of money!!

“Think and search questions are different from right there questions. Right there questions the answer is always in the text – you just need to find it! But with think and search questions you have to think about the question and use clues from the text or your own knowledge to help you.” (Darcey)

We have been extremely busy working on our topic of the Sun, Moon and Stars this week. On Monday we made models to show us what role the Earth, sun and moon play in our solar system.

“It shows us the sun stays still and doesn’t move whilst the Earth orbits the sun and also rotates. It also shows us how the moon orbits and rotates around the Earth.” (Muskaan)

We have also been learning about the different phases of the moon and made a diagram showing how the moon changes in our night sky.

“You might see a gibbous, crescent, full moon, new moon or half moon.” (Cara)

“You can also say the phases of moon are waxing or waning. Waning means the moon is getting smaller and waxing means it is getting bigger. Last night I saw a waxing gibbous.” (Cole)

Since we have been learning so much about the sun, moon and stars we decided to turn ourselves into astronauts!

“We used paper plated and cut out the middle circle and wrapped the outside in tin foil. We then drew our faces on a piece of paper and cut our faces out and glued them to the inside of the helmet. We all look like real astronauts now!” (Chloe)

Of course, all astronauts need the best transport to visit the moon or space so we have also been designing and making our own rockets to get us there that little bit faster! We researched different space shuttles and took some of the ideas we saw, along with our imagination, to make our own.

“We have been making some rockets out of construction. We had to use choose what material to make it out of and use lots of team work to build our rocket.Ours had a place for the astronauts to sleep, a booster and a launch pad.” (Ryan)

Louis, Ryan, Lauren and Eilidh show us their rocket - complete with launch pad, water cooling system and comfortable seating!

Alexander, Cameron and Maryam have worked hard to create their wonderful rocket with detachable launch pad and super fuel cells!

After all our hard work we are all in need of a relaxing weekend – we hope you have one too!
