Highlights of the Week!

Welcome to P4A’s blog.  We will be updating this site on a weekly basis to let you know about all of our fantastic learning experiences.  We have settled in well to our new class and can’t wait to see what the new term brings.

Mrs Nisbet has introduced us to many exciting math games that we will be using throughout the year.  Meanwhile, Miss Differ has taught us two new mental maths games; ping pong and last man standing.

Also, we were looking forward to working with Mrs Neil this year, focusing on ‘Big Writing’.  Mrs Neil has taught us how to use VCOP in our writing.  This week we looked at punctuation.  We did this through Kung Fu punctuation (I’m sure I can show you at home).

See below some of the interesting things we did over the Summer.

  • Lewis –  I learnt new skills at the skate park.
  • Eilidh, Darcey and Cara – We learnt how to do a front walk over at gymnastics.
  • Oscar – I started learning the violin in school.
  • Maryam and Rokaia – We learnt how to ride a bike.
  • Emma – I went to King’s Cross Station.

Science Workshop

On Tuesday, Primary 3 had some visitors to tell us more about the sun, moon and Earth.

“We looked at the Earth and had to decide where Scotland was on the globe.” (Cara)

“We revised why we have day and night. We know that the Earth spins around the sun and when the Earth is facing the sun it is daytime and when it is facing away from the sun it is night time.” (Mhairi and Chloe)

“The people doing the show were very funny and we learned lots. Something new that we learned is why it is different times around the world.” (Eilidh)

“If it was lunchtime in Scotland it would be past lunchtime in South Africa because they are facing further away from the sun.” (Ryan)

“In China they would be having their dinner when we are having lunch because they are even further around the Earth.” (Alexander)

“Australia would be sleeping when we are having lunch and in America they would be having their breakfast because they are behind us.” (Eesa)

“This is because the sun rises in the East in the morning and sets in the West at night.” (Eleya)

PE and ICT

Primary 3a have been enjoying using our new gym hall to develop our fitness skills. We have been working with a partner to complete numerous fitness stations – all of which have got our hearts racing!!

In ICT we have been working on developing our coding skills. We have been writing different algorithms which the computer has to follow in a sequence. We have also started to learn about ‘loops’. This has meant we only need to give the computer one instruction which it will automatically repeat.

We are looking forward to learning more about these topics over the coming weeks.

Vikingar

Primary 3 were very pleased to have the opportunity to go to Vikingar in Largs to learn more about their topic of the Vikings.

“The first thing we did was look at the Viking longhouse.” (Chloe)

“I learned how the Vikings made their food and that the longhouse is used for different rooms like the kitchen, bedroom and living room.” (Eleya)

“I enjoyed squeezing the little rat! I learned that they slept on benches and the adult’s bench was wider than the children’s bench.” (Ryan)

“I liked it when we pretended to make fish and chips but instead of chips we had to use oats. We also have to grind the rye to make flour for the bread.” (Eilidh)

In the longhouse we were also given the chance to try on some of the armour the Vikings would wear.

“I liked trying on the different helmets.” (Cara)

“Some of the helmets had nose and ear protectors but none of them had horns as the Vikings didn’t have them.” (Muskaan)

After the longhouse we went into ‘The Room of the Gods”.

“We got to hold shields and had to hide behind them to protect us from people throwing bean bags at us.” (Sam)

“I enjoyed hiding behind my shield, luckily no one managed to hit me!” (Cameron)

“I got hit lots when I was behind the shield!” (Cara)

In the Room of the Gods we also watched a video telling us more information about some of the Gods and Goddesses we had learned about in class.

“I learned that Odin sacrificed his eye to a serpent in order to become a God.” (Cole)

“We then learned about the different clothes the Vikings would wear depending on their job and how rick they were.” (Maryam)

“If you were a poor farmer, you would wear brown wool or sometimes green. They would make the green by making a dye from grass.” (Lauren and Sam)

“If you had a lot of money you would wear blue, purple or white. People who had lots of money were normally traders.” (Sam)

“I learned that married woman wore headscarves. If their husbands died they would get their Thor’s hammer which would tell you how many times that had been married.” (Ayla)

We had a great time at Vikingar and learned a lot more about our topic – we are excited to take our knowledge back into the classroom with us!!

Viking Longships

Over the last two weeks, Primary 3a have been working incredibly hard at home to creatively display their knowledge on Viking longships.

Some of us decided to create our own Viking longship out of a variety of materials including clay, cardboard and Lego.

Scooting

Over the last few weeks, Primary 3 have been working with Mr Phillips at Eastwood High School to learn how to scoot.

img_6536

“Before every lesson, we put on our helmets and made sure they were fitted properly.” (Eilidh)

“During our first lesson, before we started scooting, we learned the names of the different parts of the scooter.” (Alexander)

"We have he deck, which is where we stand. There are the handlebars which help us steer. At the back of the scooter there is one break which helps us stop. We have the wheels which are the most important part as they help us to move! Finally, we have the grips which is where we hold on to the scooter." (Alexander, Ryan, Darcey, Eilidh, Emma)

Over our three week block we learned a lot and have become much more confident and comfortable using our scooters.

We have learned how to glide and scoot very fast. (Maryam)

A super second week (Molly)

In language we have been doing some writing. We got to create our own imaginitive story (Abi). We have been brushing up on our use of punctuation – Miss McLaren read out a paragraph with no punctuation and didn’t stop to take a breath. That helped us see where we need to put full stops (Lois). We got a sheet with no punctuation and had to use play-doh to add in full stops and capital letters (Rachel). We have been revising our phonemes too. We had to be reminded about long and short vowel sounds (Molly)! We are really enjoying our new class novel ‘The Twits’ (Jenny).

In maths we have been applying our learning by doing challenges (Dylan). We have been learning about multiplication. We like the numberjacks multiplication songs (Ellis).

In our new topic we have been learning about where the Vikings came from (Boyd). We wrote out names using the Viking alphabet – it was fun (Aryan). We presented the powerpoints that we created for homework, which was really fun (Rebecca). We also found out we will be going on a trip to Vikingar next month! We can’t wait (Millie-Anne)!

Scooters

We were out on our scooters again this week! I loved it (Ruby)! We learned how to do a bunny hop (Austin)! I fell off my scooter (Matthew). We did 2 laps of the tracks (Tristan). I really enjoyed when we did tricks through the cones (Zara). Miss Mclaren even joined in too (Dylan). We liked racing her (Jenny)!

New beginnings :)

In maths, the moons have started to learn about fractions (Dhruv). I like fractions because it can sometimes be a bit of a challenge (Rebecca and Orla). I really enjoy the maths challenges the stars have been doing – we even did some multiplication (Lois).

Our writing lesson this week started off with a tricky challenge – we had to punctuate a paragraph! We even spotted some missing apostrophes (Aryan). We then wrote about our best part of 2016 and our new year’s resolutions (Molly)! We had a spelling test this week (Owen) – we still find phonemes a little tricky but we like learning these through fun games!

We have new target jotters. Every week we have to set ourselves a personal goal for numeracy, literacy, and one other curricular area of our choice (Austin).

I am really excited about our new Viking topic (Jenny). I think this will be a really fun topic and I am really excited to learn about the long boats (Rachel). I can’t wait to learn about what the Vikings used to eat (Cara)!

We have entered a Harry Potter competition!! We designed a professor and sent our completed pictures to London (Cara). If someone in our class wins, we will win a trip of a lifetime to discover the magic of Harry Potter at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, as well as a hardback box set of the seven Harry Potter books and Harry Potter themed goody bags (Chloe)

In PE we have been doing fitness in the new gym hall (Abi). We are also how to ride mini scooters over on the track at Eastwood (Tristan). I learned how to do a ‘miniman’ which involves crouching down on the scooter (Kai). I had great fun doing a lap of the track (Zara)! I can’t wait to learn more new tricks next time(Matthew).
