P6a 26.1.18

This week we have been working on creating our Scottish Afternoon. We have been learning Scottish songs, creating artwork and learning lots about poetry and traditions in Scotland. We are looking forward to inviting our parents to see this. It should be really fun.

In writing we created our own Scottish poems with an AABB rhyming pattern. It was tricky to make them rhyme but it was good fun. We’d like to do more poetry writing.

In French we have been learning to read, write and say different sports. We have also been working in partners and asking each other what our favourite sports are in French. It is tricky but we are working hard.

Euler has been learning about co-ordinates. They have been plotting points and creating their co-ordinate grids. It’s been great fun! We have started to revise perimeter.

Turing has been learning about place value to tens of thousands. We have been saying numbers, writing numbers and ordering numbers. It is a little tricky but we are working very hard on our knowledge of place value.

In Drama we were pretending to throw things to each other. We had to say what the thing was and then the name of someone to catch it. We’re getting very good at mining!

The magazines have started reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We are really looking forward to reading more of this book.

In PE we went into teams and were trying to improve our running skills. We started the bleep test!

Euler are learning how to plot co-ordinates and have been creating cartoons. It’s been fun!

Pythagoras have been working on converting percentages, decimals and fractions. It’s been okay now that we got back into the swing of it.

This week we have started to learn ceilidh dances. We have been doing the Gay Gordons and the Dashing White Sergeant. It has been a bit tricky as the dances are very fast. It has been fun.

We have been doing some Scottish artwork. We looked at Steven Brown’s worked and started to create our own drawing inspired by him. They are very colourful!

We have been writing about our favourite place in Scotland. We have been trying to use lots of descriptive vocabulary and our senses to make the reader feel like they are there. We also wrote about Planet Delta, we had the beginning of a story and had to continue it. It was tricky because you had to think of good ideas about what could happen in the story.

In PE we were working on fitness. We were in teams and had 15/30 seconds to do as many lengths of the hall as we could. It was tiring!

This week has been an exciting week at Crookfur primary.

In math the white has been doing patterns and relationships. The orange have been continuing time but moved onto time durations. The yellow have started co-ordinates.

In literacy we have done a selection of different subjects on spelling, comprehension and writing. In writing we were given a story starter called planet Delta and we had to continue it.

We have started a new topic called ‘Bands on Tour’. We got ourselves into groups and throughout the topic we have done all our work with them. Our first activity was to create a band; we needed to name our band, give a description of each band member and create a scrap book to record all our band information.  Then we developed our map reading skills.  We each had maps of Europe.  We discussed common themes that the map had and noticed that the capital cities were highlighted in bold writing.  We then used the maps to decide which 12 cities around Europe we would visit on our tout.  Next, we made a note of the order we would visit the cities in and then used the internet to research how long it would take to travel from city to city and what distance is between each city.  Using this information we worked out an itinerary for our 24 day tour.  We have also begun budgeting for the tour.  We need to budget for petrol, transport, accommodation, equipment, clothing and food.

In Science we learned about the eye. The black part of your eye is the pupil and the retina is at the back of your eye. We drew and labelled a diagram all about the eye.

Our bands started their tour and started to created their Tour Blog about the first few countries they visited.

Today we have started to prepare for our Scottish Open Afternoon. We started to look at Scots poetry and did some art work.

Stevenson won the House Reward this month; they are enjoying watching a film.

In Language we started new reading books. We are really enjoying them so far and looking forward to reading more.

In science we started looking at the heart and lungs. We learned what everything is called and labelled diagrams.  There are four different chambers in the heart two on the left and two on the right. We watched a video about what happens inside both of the organs, it was very fascinating (a bit gross too!).

We used a map of Europe to plan our band’s tour. We choose four countries to travel to and we researched cities in those countries and found venues to perform at. It was really fun. We have planned our twenty four day tour and are visiting at least twelve cities/towns and having fifteen concerts. We are looking forward to starting out tour next week!

In P.E we started gymnastics. We chose our partners and made a routine out of balances and rolls. We showed them to each other and it was good fun.

Today in art we looked at Samuel Peploe and all of his amazing art work. We are working on still life art and have to create our own painting inspired by Samuel Peploe’s art work. We are hoping to show our parents these at our Scottish Open Afternoon.

We started to develop our knowledge of drug awareness. We learned that alcohol can affect your perception.

On Tuesday we went to Greenlaw Grove Care Home along with some nursery pupils and we sang to the elderly residents. We sang Christmas songs and we also recited ‘Twas a Night Before Christmas.  It was very enjoyable to sing to the residents and to chat to them.  They also gave us some drinks and food.

Today we had to say goodbye to Mrs. Robertson. We had a special assembly for her.  We sang songs for her and presented her with a gift that we made.  P6b created a woordle heart.  We each wrote one word to describe Mrs. Robertson and put it together to form a heart.  We also created a booklet full of messages, poems, pictures and memories.

Today in writing we wrote a newspaper article about the Grinch stealing Christmas. We had to retell the events of the story as if we were a reporter and we even included some interviews with characters.

The white group have been converting units of measurement. The orange have been converting 12 and 24 hour time.  And the yellow group have been doing algebraic equations.

We have done some Christmas themed comprehension and reading in language. Also, we were learning about limericks and we created our own Christmas limericks.

In P.E with Mrs. McGreggor we played some Christmas P.E games in teams.

In art we have been creating snowmen with oil pastels. We have been working on blending colours and shades to represent the reflection of light.

15.12.17

On Wednesday we wrote a newspaper report about the Grinch and how he stole Christmas. We had to think of a catchy headline, use columns and paragraphs properly and have a picture and caption. We also had to write some quotes and try to write using a formal tone.

We had fun in PE this week, we were in groups and we had to get cones and make them into Christmas scenes. It was tricky and it was all about teamwork and communication. Mrs Faulkner and Mrs McGregor were the judges and walked round all of them and picked out the best.

This week Santa’s Little Helper was stolen! We walked into our classroom and it was a crime scene. We went to the ‘crime lab’ to find out who stole him. We had to look at fingerprints, dental impressions, chromatography and we looked at shoe scrapings. It was my birthday so it was a great day! (Adam) We interviews Mrs Slorach and Mr Weir as our evidence pointed to them. From that we then worked out that Mr Weir stole Santa’s Little Helper! Thankfully he was safely returned to us.

We walked up to Greenlaw Care Home with the nursery and we sang Christmas carols, played instruments and spoke to the residents. The choir also sang some lovely songs! It was really good fun.

We had a technology challenge where we had to design and make a tour bus for our band. We had to look at the design brief and decide what we were going to put in it. It was really fun to build it and we had to work really well as a team.

Today Mrs Robertson retired. We sang some of our Christmas songs and presented her with our gift. We are very sad to see her go as we have many fond memories of her teaching us. She also wrote us a song before she departed and all the teachers had to sing it at assembly!

On Monday we went to the Baptist Church for an Advent Trail. We went with pupils from Isobel Mair too.  We had a quiz to start with.  We then went into groups and had different stations which we went round; one was an arts and crafts station, 3 story stations, a quiz/ snack station and a film station.

On Tuesday at P.E we played various games of boccia which had different rules and scoring systems. On Thursday with Mrs. McGreggor we played football and dodgeball.

We have been rehearsing with the nursery pupils for our visit to the Care Home next week. We will be performing Christmas songs, poems and readings.

In science we were writing our conclusion about solids dissolving in water.

In writing we wrote letters to Olaf from the film frozen. We wrote persuasive letters, urging him not to find out what summer is like!

8.12.17

On Monday we went to the Baptist Church and took part in the Advent Trail. We walked to the church and we started by playing a game where there were multiple choice questions, we had to go to the correct corner and if we got the answer correct we’d get a marble which counted for one point. There were six different stations, some of them were about Bible stories, one was a video about the birth of Jesus, we had a quiz, drinks and cupcakes and we decorated a tile with a candle, stable or present. It was an awesome trip! We also watched the drama team do a performance of the nativity. They were very good!

Euler has started to learn about algebra, it’s really fun and we have realised that it’s not as hard as we thought it would be.

Pythagoras has started to finish their time topic. They’ve been learning about time durations and using stopwatches.

We have been working hard this week with the nursery as we are going to Greenlaw care home next week to sing songs to them and recite T’was the Night Before Christmas.

We found out that the Braehead Clan are coming to visit us before the holidays during our assembly. We are really looking forward to meeting them. The choir also sang at assembly in front of the whole school and they were wonderful!

In writing we wrote a letter to Olaf to try and persuade him that he didn’t want to find out what summer would be like! We tried to use persuasive language.

We have been doing some topical science this week; we looked into whether dolphins and whales have accents and how they communicate with each other. It was very interesting.

Zamin won the road safety competition and we are all very proud of him!
