Covid- 19 and the Vaccine

We learned about what Covid – 19 is and how the vaccine works.

Our bodies know how to fight of germs from the cold or flu, because it has seen that virus before and remembers them.  When a new virus arrives (Covid 19), it does not know what to do and we can become very ill.  The virus is surrounded by a “shell”  (protein).  The vaccine is not the virus, but the “shell” (protein).  It will then be able to recognise it if it meets it again and fight it off.

We made our “virus” using pipe cleaners, pom poms and googly eyes.

First Day Back

We had a brilliant first day back after Lockdown.  We were all so happy to see each other and the day was spent playing and socialising and feeling happy again.  We built Lego creations, read books, did craft, coloured and created 3D structures.  We also did a bit of phonics and maths.  But the highlight of the day was playing in the field for the afternoon.  we climbed trees, made a pretend campfire, walked about with enormous branches, balanced on branches and discovered a whole world of minibeasts.  So much learning outdoors in the lovely sunshine.

Unfortunately, Mrs Arbuckle didn’t take any photos!  So unlike her!  She was too busy enjoying being back with the children and playing alongside them. : )

Snow Boots

Lots of children came to school in wellies or snow boots and we all changed into our gym shoes in class, so that we didn’t put snow on our carpet.  (We play and sit on it, so it wouldn’t be too good if it was wet!)  We put a peg on our wellies to keep them together.  It is good to wear boots to go out and play in the snow.  Feet get cold and wet in shoes.

Team Work

When we were allowed to use our PE hall before Lockdown, we learned about team work by creating letters of the alphabet in our groups and cooperating with one another.  It is a life skill.   We have been learning about capital letters in class and we attempted to make them, using the shapes we created with our bodies.

Skipping

We are learning how to use skipping ropes in PE.  Skipping is great exercise, but has become a lost skill over the years.  We also tried jumping over the big rope Mrs Arbuckle held one end of the rope, so there aren’t any photos!)   Practise makes perfect!  If a child can skip, they were encouraged to hop;  use alternate feet or skip backwards. there was a real sense of achievement when some children did it for the first time. Have a go!  It’s great fun!

Feel Your Bones!

We had a feel of our bones today.  The felt all knobbly and bobbly.  We knew that our ribs protected our lungs.  we didn’t know that children’s bones are “bendy” and aren’t fully formed.  We looked at an x ray of an adult hand and a child’s hand and compared the differences.

We made our skeletons with cotton buds.
