What an amazing night at the opening of K-Fest.

Our Onthank Ambassadors joined our very own Mr McIlwraith, Mr Swan and the rest of Loudoun Musical Society on stage to perform an amazing night of music. They were fantastic and were a credit to the school.

What a way to end P3! We had the most amazing sunshine for our ‘Water Day’. Pupils and teachers had so much fun!! A big thank you to Mr MacLeod and P5M for helping at all of the stations.

A great performance from our Primary 7s at their Leavers’ Assembly today.

An emotional but very proud day for lots of our parents and carers who were in attendance.

We wish all of our Primary 7 Leavers well as they continue on their learning journey at their respective new schools.

We had over 450 members of the Onthank Community attend our Community Night for an evening of fun, friendship and food.

A big Thank You to Mr Swan, our Parent Council volunteers and our staff for making it such an enjoyable evening.

We hope to see many of you attending our next one in the new session.

On Thursday 27th June all P3 classes will be participating in some fun water activities.

As the weather forecast looks good we are asking for pupils to wear shorts and t-shirts to school but to bring a change of clothes and a towel.?

Hello-Summer-Activities

Congratulations to all at Onthank Primary School for achieving Dyslexia Friendly Schools Silver Status following our recent accreditation visit.

A group of P6 pupils along with Mrs Klein and Mrs Bell attended the award ceremony on Wednesday at Dumfries House, Cumnock to collect the award.

Campbell, Emily, Evie, Euan, Gregor and Rhiannon delivered a confident presentation highlighting the good work being  carried out throughout the school to include and support all learners.

They were delighted to accept the award on behalf of everyone at the school.

P7 had a fantastic trip to Millport today. Members of the public and people working on the island had nothing but praise for our pupils. A big thank you to the parents who came along to help on the day.

On Saturday, Tulisa Webb was lucky enough to officially open the NWKLEUS Centre. After more than 500 entries, Tulisa was the winner of the NWKLEUS logo design competition with her logo – congratulations!

P7 Millport Trip

The buses will leave at 8.45am tomorrow and return for 3pm. Pupils should wear suitable clothing and have been advised to bring a towel if they plan to go on the beach area. There is a £15 spending money limit and pupils should not bring mobile phones or any other electrical devices with them. Pupils are welcome to bring disposable cameras if they wish. Fingers crossed for the weather.

Only a week until the author Chris Duke visits us to share his story called ‘Lucy’s Blue Day’.

He is offering an online discount for parents and teachers. This discount removes the postage and packaging. He will bring the books with him next Tuesday.

Does your child have a school uniform that they have outgrown? Then why not drop into our school swap shop and swap it for another!

Based at the school reception, our swap shop is a great way for parents to donate or swap any school uniforms, jackets, bags, etc.

If you have any school uniform items, jackets, bags or packed lunch boxes you wish to donate then please hand these into the school office.

There is a great selection of school jumpers, cardigans, polo shirts, etc. already on display so come in and take your pick!

Amro and Mahmoud in P4F came to visit P3W to share a presentation about Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. The boys explained that they shared special family time and enjoyed celebrating.

Onthank’s annual Fun Day will take place today. The cost of stalls range from 10p-50p. All pupils should wear school uniform as normal. All parents and carers are invited to join their child at their allocated time. Tea/coffee and home baking will be on offer. The timetable for the day is as follows:

P6/7 Dance Fest Ambassadors have been invited by East Ayrshire Council in collaboration with Celebrate Kilmarnock to perform at two local events to represent our school community.

Event: Community Celebration

Date: Friday 14^th June (this Friday)

Venue: Celebrate Kilmarnock Shop (Kings Street, Kilmarnock)

Pupils will leave school after lunch at 1.15pm with Mr Swan and another member of staff and walk to Kings Street for their performance, after which they will return to school and continue with their weekly rehearsal until 4pm.

Pupils will be in their school uniform.

Event: ‘Anthems from Broadway & Beyond’ K – Fest Cabaret

Pupils have been invited to unite with Loudoun Musical Society for this annual K-Fest Cabaret which launches a weekend of events for the local community to celebrate our town and the people in it.

Pupils have been working on their repertoire with Mr Swan in their weekly Friday rehearsals and are very excited to perform for an audience of over 600 community members.

Pupils are required to attend the Dress Rehearsal. Please see details below:

P1 Plea for Donations

Primary 1 staff are looking for a range items to help develop our outdoor area and loose parts play. Please contact the school on 01563 525477 or speak to a member of Primary 1 staff if you have any of the following items:

Old teapots, cups, containers, trays etc.

• Screws, bolts, nuts, nails etc. for fine motor and tinkering.
• Any old tools that the children can use e.g. hammers, spanners, screwdrivers etc.
• Wooden pegs, corks, pebbles, wood rounds and other natural resources.
• Old kitchen equipment such as sieves, bowls, spoons, forks, wooden spoons scales etc .
• Pipets, measuring jugs, measuring spoons, beakers etc.
• Any used electrical equipment e.g. hairdryers, blenders etc. or used furniture.
• Fabric, old clothes and accessories for role play.

Fitness Friday was a huge success with our young children this afternoon, with over 400 children participating in lots of activities including dodgeball, tennis, rounders, playground games and relay races.

It was a great afternoon in the sun ☀ with a big thumbs up ?? from our children.

P5 will be participating in various STEM related activities this term.  Next week’s challenge will require pupils to use a 500 ml plastic bottle that has a screw top lid.  Since all the P5 classes are taking part we will need quite a lot so it would great if pupils could bring a bottle with them next week.  We will also be helping the environment because we are re-using the bottles!

The P3s will be visiting the Heads of Ayr Farm Park on Thursday 30 May. They will leave school around 9.15 am and will return by 3.00 pm. Children are required to wear suitable clothing (with school sweatshirts) socks and full length leggings/joggers for soft play. Children should bring a non fizzy drink, a snack and a packed lunch. If you would like the school to provide a packed lunch please complete form below stating which kind of sandwich your child would like – Gammon, Tuna or Cheese.

We were delighted to welcome next year’s Primary Ones to school to taste school dinners. Everyone had a lovely meal with their guests and met their teachers.

P2 are walking to the Dean Park on Tuesday 4 June for a Nature Hunt. They will leave the school around 9.30 am and return by lunchtime.  Your child should wear suitable outdoor clothing/footwear, with school sweatshirts and bring a snack and a non fizzy drink.

Kieran McMaster from Northwest Boxing Club visited the school today as part of Positive Choices Week. Many pupils were surprised by how much they enjoyed taking part in the noble art. The club has a fantastic facility and is on the doorstep of our school.

P7B/M (am) & P7M (pm) will visit the Dean Castle tomorrow (Thursday 23 May). The pupils will get a rare glimpse inside the castle before it opens again to the public in 2021 and see the progress being made with the restoration process. Both classes will have their lunch at school as normal. Pupils should wear school uniform and sturdy shoes (trainers are acceptable).

P3 Girls Football May-June

As part of Positive Choices Week, P6K enjoyed a session from Kilmarnock Football Club.  The focus was on Kilmarnock Community Sports Trust and the importance of being active.

Active Schools in partnership with Kilmarnock Academy PE Department would like to support the transition from Primary to Secondary school by offering the primary pupils within the Kilmarnock Education group the opportunity to be involved in a sporting opportunity at the academy.

Kilmarnock Academy would like to offer all P7 pupils the opportunity to participate in our after school Basketball and Netball programme. The aim is to promote a smooth transition from Primary to Secondary school.

Our school will be taking part in the East Ayrshire Walk to School Week, which runs from Monday 20 May – Friday 24 May 2019. A daily walking theme has been created to encourage children to walk.

We all know that walking is good for us. Walking to school is not only easy, but it is a great way to exercise and keep fit. Walking to school also helps reduce pollution, and can boost pupils’ social and road skills.

We are seeking your support for this campaign, and hopefully you will join in by walking with your child/children to school for all or part of the week. If you normally travel by car, you can still take part – leave home 5 minutes earlier in the morning, park way from the school and enjoy a 5 minute walk to the school. That’s all it takes to join in.

P6K and P6M had a very informative morning at Danger Detectives.  Lots of different safety activities to get us all thinking about keeping safe.

Have you heard of Lucy’s Blue Day?

This is a beautifully illustrated book aimed at addressing the mental health of children.

We have two copies of the book in school. One of which was donated by an ex Loanhead Primary pupil who is raising money to buy a book for every primary school in East Ayrshire.

We are very lucky to have the author Chris Duke visiting Onthank Primary on Tuesday 25th June to read the book and answer questions.

Chris is travelling from Forfar to visit us and he will visit Galston Primary and Hillhead Primary on the same day to share the same message.

P3W explored the various emotions and related it to their own lives.

We have started rehearsals for our Scottish Opera 1719 show.  We have a workshop next week with Scottish Opera staff to help us prepare for the performance on Friday 17th May at 2:15pm (tea and coffee from 1:45pm).  We hope you can come and watch us at our afternoon performance.

To celebrate the school’s 60th Birthday in style, our young people have taken ownership for designing and creating 3 special concerts with performances based on their favourite highlights from across the decades.

Our Birthday Concerts will take place tomorrow, WEDNESDAY 1 MAY, in our school hall and in the following format:

P2 & P3 Concert at 9.30 am

P4 & P5 Concert at 11.15 am

P6 & P7 Concert at 2.00 pm

P1 pupils are making a video which will be shown at each concert therefore we invite P1 families to attend a performance of their choice.
