A royal visit to Crossgates

We took a short break from our Royal Wedding celebrations on Friday to visit Crossgates Care Home. The staff are working hard in preparation for the care home reopening its doors, so we thought we’d take them some wedding cake to have during a well deserved break!

More Success

The P7 Football team competed in the South and West area finals today; winning 5 games and drawing 1. This meant they won the tournament and now progress to the National Finals where there are only 8 teams left from the whole of Scotland.

The P5/6 team were also competing in this tournament and were unlucky in the games that they played in not to get more from them.

Both teams were a massive credit to the school!

Royal Wedding Attire

Our P1s and their P7 buddies were set the challenge today of designing a suit and wedding dress for Prince Harry and Meghan to wear to the Royal Wedding. Pupils experimented with our new iPads to create the designs. Which one would you like to wear?

Viking Visitor

Primary 3 had a very special visitor today – a Viking!

He told us all about Viking life and about being a Beserker! Some children were allowed to try out his shield and weapons. Mrs Easter even tried to attack him with his own sword. It was really fascinating and brought our Viking topic to life.

Our P6 Euro Quiz team headed to the Scottish Parliament today. They competed against 31 other schools from around Scotland, in the final of this year’s quiz. While not coming top 3, our team answered many challenging questions. Huge congratulations to the boys for their hard work in studying for the quiz. Everyone is very proud of you!

Come Dine With Us

Primary 3 pupils invited parents and carers to come and dine with us.

We got the chance to talk to many of you during our ‘Come Dine with Us’.  We were able to discuss a variety of topics and were delighted that many parents offered their time to work with us to improve our school.   Please look out for the opportunity to volunteer with our 60 minute make-overs.

If you are a Primary 3 parent please give us feedback below –

Onthank Values

Following our consultation we would like everyone to learn our shared values.

As a school our pupil council challenged us to know our shared values. Already many children do and they have been teaching others.

P6A created Nature Palettes

P6A headed out to garden to look at the colours, scents and textures in nature. The children selected natural items and stuck them to their ‘Nature Palette’.

Rhys said, ‘I was surprised by how soft the leaves were.’

Owen shared, ‘When I was looking at the flowers, I saw lavender and it smelt so good!’

Once back in the classroom, Liam interviewed Ellie and they discussed the lesson and heard more about Ellie’s choices for her Nature Palette.  Watch the video below.

Kick off your reading

East Ayrshire Libraries are delighted to be working in collaboration with the SPFL Trust and Kilmarnock Football club to bring the 4-4-2 Reading Challenge to local children.

As a reward for reading and using the library we are offering free tickets to Kilmarnock home games.

All that primary aged children need to do is borrow 4 books from the library (on their own card, not a group card) and when they return the fourth book they get a card stamped which they take to Rugby Park to exchange for 1 free child ticket and 1 discounted adult ticket on selected home games.  The challenge runs until the end of May but completed vouchers can be redeemed until the end of October.

Eggcellent Designs by P5

Primary 5 enjoyed the last day of term by making some eggcellent designs. They had to design a character or personality using hard boiled eggs and a backdrop to go along with it.

All of our designs were outstanding but congratulations to our 1st and 2nd place winners, Olivia, Rebecca and Emily.

Happy Easter from all in P5!

Improving Attendance

When you miss school …you miss out!

All parents/carers should have received an attendance print out with their child’s report card.

We have a number of children who have less than 90% attendance and too many absences recorded as an unauthorised absence (this will appear as a U on the printout).

For those children with less than 90 % or children with unauthorised absences we would like to speak to you about ways we can work together to improve this. We are hoping this will reduce the percentage of children throughout the school who are below 90%  Please find attached EAC guidelines which maybe of help.  We sent this leaflet with the last newsletter.

P3 Dean Park Visit

Take a look at some photos of our day out  to Dean Park where we were Nature Detectives, looking for animal tracks and signs of spring as our trip out coincided with the first day of spring.

We also tried out the new park facilities at Dean Park and gave them a big thumbs up. Especially the slide which was really speedy.

Heartstart training

As part of Health and Wellbeing, Mrs Williams and Miss Smith have been teaching all classes how to help in an emergency situation. The pupils already know how to make an ambulance call, put a casualty in the Recovery Position and they can help someone who has bad bleeding. By the end of the course pupils will be able to perform and recognise signs of a heart attack and perform CPR.

Primary 7 have been busy looking at famous inventors to help inspire our own inventions. We were lucky enough to have George Burns come in and help us design aeroplanes to kickstart our imaginations. We will now go and write up our inventions and enter into the Scottish Inventors Award 2018.
