In the run up to the Christmas period P5B will be collecting household items such as milk bottle lids, beer bottle tops, bottle corks, twigs, pine cones, acorns, buttons and toilet roll tubes.
All of these items will be useful for making our Christmas crafts. It would be much appreciated if children could collect these items over the next fortnight or so in their free time and bring them into school ready to create their Christmas Fayre items.
Today, children took part in activities that highlighted the difficulty some dyslexic children can experience when reading and writing. Why not ask your child to give you an example of what they had to read and write?
Pupils also challenged their peers to a round of Pelmanisms using a pack of playing cards. ‘Nigeria’ were the winning group. Great memories all round.
In addition to the homework set by the class teacher (check the homework slip in your jotter) P5E and P5B pupils have also now been assigned their topic research task:
Research interesting facts about an African country (assigned in class). This can include the following:
*Location in Africa *Population *Size *Climate/Weather *Popular food and drink *Culture *Religions *Languages spoken*Tourism/Famous landmarks *Famous People *Animals in that region
This list is not exhaustive – it may just be a fact you think your classmates would find interesting. Pupils should also think about using non-fiction features to sort their information (e.g. heading, sub-heading, bullet points, pictures/illustrations)
Pupils can choose how to present their information to the class (e.g. PowerPoint, poster, fact file etc.).
It should be ready for Friday 30th November.
This means that all P5 classes have been assigned a similar task, although the date of completion may differ so please double check the date your class has set.
P5E have started their new novel for this term, The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo. After chapter 1 we compared our school to the main character’s experience of his boarding school. We used a Venn diagram to display this information.
African country research project– due 27th November
As part of our termly topic on Africa, all P5M pupils have been given a specific country to research. How the children present the information is entirely up to them. Presentations will be presented by children to their peers, this will help everyone have a greater understanding of the diversity of African countries. The country allocation is as follows:
Nathan – Liberia Melody – Kenya Jaiden – Madagascar
Liam – Nigeria Josh – Djibouti Gemma – Mali
Sophie M – Angola Lewis – Chad Jessica – Senegal
Layla – Cameroon Kalib – Ghana Aaron – South Africa
They saved the best until last! Our rescheduled trip to Dundonald Castle took place last Thursday. The kids had the chance to meet a viking, a knight and a professional falconer! They even managed to have a go at all the activities themselves. The staff at Dundonald Castle were full of praise for the pupils, a credit to Onthank Primary School. Well done P5M!
Spelling homework this week will focus on the same sounds as last week (ae) but with a new selection of words. It is also Own Choice week when pupils can choose which activity to do from the grid, as well as activity A.
Maths homework is based on Problem Solving (what number operation is used to find the answer?) with a cryptic challenge at the end. Something a little different to get the children (and adults?) thinking.
Children are progressing well with their ‘Learn Its’, recalling number facts on sight. Please continue to challenge your child on these and previous week’s numbers to greatly improve their skills. The new ‘Learn Its’ for this week are:
5 + 6; 6 + 3; 12 + 4; 3 + 4; 9 + 8
African country research project– due 25th November
As part of our termly topic on Africa, all P5i pupils have been given a specific country to research. Children can make up a PowerPoint presentation, compile a fact file, create a book … the only limit is their imagination. Presentations should be factual, interesting, informative and in their own words. No copy and pasting please. As presentations will be presented by children to their peers, I am really looking forward to learning new and interesting facts about the countries chosen by them.
Primary 5M took advantage of no pens day Wednesday to explore active spelling. The class used coloured clay to create 3D spelling words. All pupils participated and enjoyed creating words rather than writing them down!
Well done everyone who successfully completed their homework last week. Enjoy your sense of achievement.
This week you will have maths homework (due Thursday) and spelling homework (due Friday).
To help you with maths and language please remember to log into your Book Club account. There are lots of Maths games on the Bug Club site for all to enjoy with new options allocated each week.
Log into your Bug Club account regularly and read as many books as you can.
Remember: Something new is learned every time a page is read!(old Chinese proverb)
P5M are currently looking at different types of forces. Today we explored the concept of gravity and its importance to our everyday life. Every pupil was given a balloon and a straw to see how long they could beat gravity. Everyone enjoyed themselves, however inflating 24 balloons in a 3 minute period is not recommended!!
Our next lesson will look at air resistance and gravity which I’m sure will be an eggcellent experience. 🥚🥚
