Maths Week Scotland at Mount Carmel

We are very excited to be celebrating Maths Week Scotland starting on the 23rd September. This year’s national theme is ‘Wild Maths’, and throughout the week pupils across the school will be exploring how maths is all around us in nature, the outdoors, and our everyday lives.

Throughout the week, pupils will outdoors taking part in a range of fun and engaging activities. With this is mind could pupils please ensure they have a jacket and appropriate footwear.

To support learning at home, pupils will bring home a Maths Week homework grid. Pupils are encouraged to complete as many of the activities as possible – please take pictures and send them to the school email!

We are still hoping some parents and carers could send in videos of how they use maths in their jobs.

We can’t wait to celebrate Maths Week Scotland at Mount Carmel.

P7 Curricular Update – Term 1

Primary 7 Term 1 Curricular Update

Welcome back. We hope everyone had a lovely summer and enjoyed the fabulous weather. It’s great to have Primary 7 back and we also welcome Mrs Canning to our classroom who will teach on a Monday. Primary 7 is such a special year and we are delighted to support your children through their final year at Mount Carmel.

Below is an overview of the exciting learning and teaching taking place this term.

Literacy

Reading

This term our focus is on fiction texts. P7 will read fiction text pertinent to their CfE level. They will complete daily reading to writing tasks and work on active comprehension tasks, both independently and as a group. Most groups will focus on answering comprehension questions using quotes and evidence from the text, a skill they will need in S1. We will also be expecting P7 to use active comprehension strategies across other areas of the curriculum.

Writing

P7 will focus on two writing genres this term: Descriptive and Discursive. Both genre’s link with our Term 1 topic – Land Uses. P7 will use their descriptive writing skills to describe and compare two different landscapes within our local area. Pupils will build on their discursive writing skills to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a proposed land use development in Kilmarnock.

Spelling

The spelling groups will continue to experience the Active Literacy spelling program; this will introduce common words and focus phonemes pertinent to their level and stage. The pupils will revise the Active Spelling strategies throughout Term 1, these include diacritical marking, syllabification and words within words.

Numeracy

P7 start Term 1 by revising their fraction knowledge from P6 and moving on to identifying and using percentages in different ways, understanding the links between fractions, decimals and percentages. These are important skills so we will dedicate time to ensure pupils feel confident applying them in a range of contexts. Most pupils will focus on decimal place value and using decimals within the four operations. They will also be introduced to negative numbers and practice applying these in real life situations. Mrs Canning will focus on Beyond Number on a Monday. P7 will be building on their understanding of Area and Perimeter.

Health and Wellbeing

In P7 we continue to follow the PATHS programme to support pupils social and emotional wellbeing. In P7 there is a strong focus on developing skills for transition to secondary school. This term the PATHS focus is learning strategies to manage stress.

Primary 7 will be focussing on ‘Super Skills for Super Futures’, life skills that will support them in S1 and beyond. In Term 1 we will focus on positive mental health and how this can be nurtured and fostered collectively.

Our PE days are Monday (Mrs Canning) and Wednesday (Mrs Terras). Pupils are required to have a FULL change on these days. P7 will build on their Badminton and Hockey skills this term with some pupils encouraged to use their existing skills to ‘coach’ other pupils.

French

Mrs Canning will teach French on a Monday. P7 will learn vocabulary related to environment and become familiar use a bilingual dictionary to be able to read simple French texts independently.

Expressive Arts

It is not a secret we love signing and music in Primary 7! This term the Charanga music programme will allow pupils to discuss and learn about different genres of music, rhythm and tempo and instruments. It also allows them to sing different genres as well. Whole school hymn assembly on a Tuesday will allow pupils to learn and sing new hymns and songs together.

RME

P7 continue to work towards their Pope Francis Faith Award. This award encourages children to live out their faith at school, at home and in the Parish. Pupils will work towards their award by reflecting on Gospel values, taking part in acts of service, and sharing their faith through words and actions. The Diocese of Galloway planners will support the core teaching of RME in Primary 7 covering key events in the liturgical calendar.

IDL

Our main topic this term is Land Uses (residential, tourism and business). In this topic P7 will learn about how land is used in Kilmarnock for the purposes of housing, business and tourism. P7 evaluate a proposed land use in Kilmarnock and its impact on their community. Pupils will have the opportunities to analyse maps, discuss sustainability, and compare Land Use in Kilmarnock to another town in Scotland.

 UNCRC

As a school we are working towards our Rights Respecting Schools Silver Award. During the first week back at school P7 (the rights holders) discussed and created their class charter with their teachers (the duty bearers). The rights they chose were:

  • Every child has a right to an education
  • Every child has the right to play and rest
  • Every child has the right to be listened to.

Linking in with the Class Charter, Primary 7 enjoyed the Reward Card system last year and asked to use it again in P7. The reward card system allows pupils to gain reward cards for Wonderful Work, Amazing Attitude, and being a ‘Superstar.’ When the pupils gain five cards, they can choose an individual reward. They can also choose to go for a class reward once everyone reaches five reward cards; this promotes teamwork within the class.

Learner Journals

Pupils will continue to Learner Journals to reflect on their progress and celebrate achievements. We encourage parents and carers to login to Learner Journals as it provides a valuable link between home and school.

Thank you,

Mrs Terras and Mrs Canning

Maths Week Scotland – We need your help

This year Maths Week Scotland will take place from Monday 22nd September. The theme is Wild Maths, and as a school we’ll be exploring how maths connects to the outdoor, nature, and the wider world around us.

To make this event even more exciting, we’d love to involve our parents and carers. Maths isn’t just about something with do in the classroom, it’s a skill that’s used in many different jobs every single day.

We’d love if some parents and carers would be willing to record a short video (1 – 2 minutes long) for our learners, explaining how you use maths in your work.

You might include:

  • What your job is
  • The kind of maths you use (measuring, estimating, planning, problem solving, data handling, counting money)
  • Why maths is important in your role
  • (optional) Any ‘wild’ maths connection – maybe you work outside, with animals, plants, construction, travel or in ways that help the environment.

Below is a script which will help with your video.

  1. Introduce yourself

“Hello my name is ….. and I work as a …..

  1. Explain how you use Maths in your job

“In my role, I use maths when I… (give 1 or 2 examples)

  1. Link to ‘Wild Maths’ if you can

“This links to the outdoors/nature/wild maths…

  1. Finish with a positive message

“Maths is important in my job because it helps me….”

Please send your video to the school email address by Thursday 18th September.

Thank you,

Mrs Terras

Sharing the Learning – Primary 6

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Sharing the Learning afternoon. It was nice to welcome families into our classroom and give you a taster of how P6 learn about fractions.

P6 enjoyed showing their families the different types of fractions they’ve been exploring. It was great to see the adults using the strategies and concrete resources to ‘relearn’ about fractions.

We hoped you enjoyed seeing the different ways we learn, through discussion, games, problem solving, and hands on activities.

Sharing the Learning – P6

I am delighted to invite you to our upcoming Sharing the Learning session on Thursday 19th June at 2:00pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to share their progress and for you to gain an insight into how we teach and learn  in the classroom.

Pupils have a sign up slip home with them today.

We hope you can join us for an afternoon of hands-on maths and pupil-led learning.

Parent/Carer Show Survey

Today we performed our last Joseph show.  Our summer show was a fantastic celebration of talent and teamwork. The children were fantastic throughout the full rehearsal period and performances.

Another huge thank you to all the staff who helped behind the scenes, and of course the families and friends who can to support and cheer on the children. Your encouragement means the world to our young performers.

To help us make future shows even better, please take a few minutes to complete a short survey. This short survey is designed to gather parent/carer views on both our P1-3 Nativity and Summer Show. Your responses will help us celebrate what we do well and make improvements for future shows.

Click this link for survey – Parent/Carer Show Survey

Thank you again for all your support!

Joseph Rehearsals – It’s all coming together!

Rehearsals are in full swing, and the excitement is building! The cast and crew have been working incredibly hard, learning lines, perfecting songs and bringing scenes to life. Below is a sneak peek of some of the show highlights…

Joseph Costumes

Dear Parents and Carers,

A reminder about costumes for our Summer Show. The school will be providing the main accessories and props for Principals, but we would be very grateful if you could supply the basic costume items for your child. Below is what is required for each Principal role.

Pupils in the chorus are asked to wear black trousers/leggings and a plain, bright coloured top. We do have spare tops in school if required.

Thank you,

Mrs Terras

Danger Detectives

Last Wednesday P6 walked to Dean Park to take part in the Danger Detective event. Danger Detectives is an experiential learning event that aims to reduce accidents amongst young people whilst building community resilience. The pupils took part in a range of real life scenarios such as Anti social behaviour, Home Fire Safety, a Road Safety campaign, Countryside Safety and Drowning Prevention.

P6 were engaged in all the activities and enjoyed the event.

Sunshine and Stories: Primary 6 Take Their Reading Outdoors

There’s something magical about a good book and a sunny day—and Primary 6 certainly discovered that today. They read the first chapters of their new reading books outside.

We’re looking forward to making outdoor reading a regular part of our week (weather permitting!). There’s no better way to combine a love of books with the joy of being outside.

Cast Announcement – Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

Today we announced the cast for our upcoming Summer Show ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’. The children have worked incredibly hard throughout the audition process and we are so proud of their enthusiasm, bravery and talent.

We understand that some children may feel disappointed if they didn’t receive the part they were hoping for. However, every role – whether a lead, ensemble or behind the scenes helper – is crucial to making our show a success.

We reminded the children that theatre is about more than just individual roles; it’s about storytelling, teamwork, and having fun! Every member of the cast and crew is valued, and we cannot wait to see them shine on stage.

As always, thank you for your continued support. We look forward to an amazing production!

Mrs Terras, Mrs McIntyre, Miss Dorby, Mr Bertoncini

Primary 4 Term 1 Update

Welcome back! We hope you have all had an enjoyable summer. It has been fantastic to see P4 settle into their new classroom and routines.

We have had a great start to the term and look forward to a fun-filled term with lots of fabulous learning taking place.

Here is an update on the upcoming term.

 Literacy

For our reading focus this term, we will be developing our comprehension strategies such as visualisation and metalinguistics through our class novel ‘The Iron Man’. The children will be introduced to similes and onomatopoeia; some children can use these in their writing.

During writing, we will start by continuing to develop our sentence structure and use of description bubbles for various descriptive pieces, we then then continue to work on our characterisation through descriptive skills and language narrative writing.

Spelling will take the form of active spelling activities and the children will experience phonemes and blends at their working level.

P4 will also be given revision lessons on alphabetical order, sentence structure and dictionary skills.

 Numeracy & Maths

P4 have already looked at how Maths impacts the world around us and where we use Maths in our day to day lives. We have started learning how to round 2 and 3 digits to the nearest 10 and the nearest 100.

The class will review Place Value knowledge and use it to build on their sense of number. We will look at 4-digit numbers and read, write order and recite these numbers. Through our place value work, we will be able to identify the value of each digit.

We will then progress to looking at our addition strategies. The class will participate in a daily number talk, to develop mental maths strategies.

In Beyond Number, the class will start with shaping, look at the properties of a range of 2D and 3D shapes and create tiling patterns. We will then move on to investigate the use of mathematical language to describe and record directions.

 Health and Wellbeing

At the start of the term, P4 discussed and identified their right as a child. As a class, we agreed on a Class Charter to allow our class to be fun, safe, hardworking and respectful.

This term we will begin our PATHS programme for P4. Lessons will include setting up our class rules, looking at individual emotions, building friendships and community within the school, Self-Control and Anger Management.  We will also start the Do Be Mindful programme which will allow us, using a range of strategies, to look at ways we can take a mindful moment each day.

 PE

PE is on a Thursday and Friday. This term we will be covering;

  • Team Games
  • Football
  • Badminton

PE kit must be brought in and left at the start of each term. Before each holiday, the kit will be sent home for washing to be freshened up and returned on the first day back.  Please make sure your child is not wearing jewellery on these days as they will be unable to participate in the lesson for health and safety reasons. If your child cannot take part for any reason, please contact the school.

 French

We will be revising the alphabet, basic French phrases and numbers this term through, songs, activities and games.

 IDL

P4 will be learning to carry out a comparison study on the rainforest and the Arctic. We will link this with our literacy through our descriptive writing and will develop mapping skills.

 Expressive Arts

In Music, we will be using ‘Charanga’ to appraise and learn a song. P4 will have the opportunity to use our new school glockenspiels to accompany the song, learning about rhythm, pace and beat.

During Drama lessons, the pupils will take part in drama activities to support teamwork and improve confidence. We will also ‘act out’ parts of our class novel.

As we move on to our IDL topic, we will use various mediums to create some beautiful artwork to depict the rainforest and Arctic, looking at the idea of hot and cold colours.

 Religious Education

This term we will be reflecting on our uniqueness and thinking about our God-given talents. We will reflect on the importance of friendship and link this with various stories from the Bible. The children will take part in class prayers and School Masses, and we will continue to build on our knowledge of common prayers and Mass responses.

Homework will be distributed on a Monday to be completed and returned by Friday.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to a fabulous term with P4!

The Wizard of Oz

Although the costumes have been packed away, the make up and face paint has finally washed off and the set has been dismantled, the memories of our Senior Show live on.

We are delighted to share some of the photos of the wonderful cast and crew of ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

God’s Loving Plan – Primary 6

Next week Primary 6 will embark on God’s Loving Plan.

God’s Loving Plan teaches children how to develop healthy and respectful attitudes to their bodies and all aspects of God’s gift of life. ‘God’s Loving Plan’ connects the Religious Education curriculum and the Health and wellbeing curriculum.

Any parents and carers who do not wish their child to be part of these lessons please contact the school by 3pm on Friday 23rd June.

Thank you,

Mrs. Terras

Primary 6 Class News

Term 4 P6 Class News

Welcome back to the final term; a busy and exciting one for Primary 6. During this term, P6 will prepare to transition into Primary 7 by applying and interviewing for Captain and Vice-Captain roles. P6 will also have the chance to apply to be a buddy to our new Primary 1’s in August. P6 will get the opportunity to meet the Pastoral Care team from St Joseph’s Academy. Probably the most exciting news is that the Senior Summer show has returned! In June, the P6 and P7 will return to the stage to perform ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

Alongside all these exciting events lots of learning and teaching will still be taking place as outlined below.

 Literacy

Reading

This term our focus returns to fiction texts. P6 will read and study books appropriate to their level. They will complete daily reading to writing tasks and work on active comprehension tasks both independently and as a group. Focus comprehension strategies this term is understanding the difference between fact and opinion, inference and author’s use of language. All pupils will complete a final fiction reading assessment at the end of the block of lessons.

Writing

This term P6 will be introduced to and experience writing persuasive essays using sources and/or evidence from a text to backup ideas and opinions. Some groups will learn to acknowledge sources by recording the titles and authors of texts used.

Spelling

The spelling groups will continue to experience the Active Literacy spelling program, some groups will be completing the spelling planner they are currently working through, ready to start a new spelling planner in P7. The pupils will revise the Active Spelling strategies throughout Term 4, these include diacritical marking, syllabification, and words within words.  Some weeks pupils will be given topic-specific vocabulary as part of their topic.

Numeracy

This term P6 will focus on Area, Perimeter and Volume, Angles, Information Handling and Function Machines. Some groups will be introduced to BODMAS. Daily revision and rigour of decimals, percentages and fractions and the four operations will continue. Pupils are encouraged to make use of Topmarks and Sumdog to revise and practice multiplication tables.

ealth and Wellbeing

At the start of the term P6 will complete a mini topic on Substance Misuse looking at the dangers of smoking/vaping, alcohol and drugs usage. Through this topic

Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday. Pupils are asked to bring FULL PE kit on these days. If pupils are without PE kit the school will be able to provide pupils with required items of clothing. The focus in PE this term is Volleyball, Athletics and Orienteering.

 Expressive Arts

The Expressive Arts are key to any child’s education, giving them opportunities to enjoy being creative and imaginative, expressing emotion, performing for different audiences, and being part of audiences for others, as well as learning key skills in Music, Art and Design, Dance and Drama. Our Senior Summer ‘The Wizard of Oz ‘will incorporate all key areas of the Expressive Arts. A school play is a fantastic team-building exercise and it’s a great way for children to understand what’s possible when everyone pools their skills and weight.

RME

This term P6 will continue to listen to and reflect on stories from the Gospel of Matthew. P6 will also continue to work on their Pope Francis Faith Award, focussing on a different gift each couple of weeks.

Homework

Homework this term will include Spelling, Reading, Mental Maths, and one other curricular area (RME, topic, etc). Homework is issued on a Monday and is due back on a Friday. I appreciate and wholeheartedly support wider achievement outside of school. If there are any reasons why pupils cannot complete the homework, due to activities out with school please contact the school.

In Primary 6 we promote hard work and amazing attitudes. Our reward card system allows pupils to gain reward cards for Wonderful Work, Amazing Attitude, and being a ‘Superstar.’ When the pupils gain five cards, they can choose an individual reward. They can also choose to go for a class reward once everyone reaches five reward cards; this promotes teamwork within the class.

If you have any queries or questions, please contact the school directly.

Thank you for all your support.

P6 Friday Reward

Subject to our rainy weather, Primary 6 would like to bring in their scooters and bikes for Reward Play on Friday.

All pupils need to wear a helmet when using their bike/scooter.

Electric bikes and scooters are NOT permitted.

Thank you,

Mrs Terras

Our week in Primary 6

Primary 6 have had a very successful week. Here is some of the excellent learning that has taken place this week:

P6 listened to the story of the poppies and reminded themselves of the importance of Remembrance Day. P6 created blackout poems based on John McCrae’s ‘In Flander’s Fields’. Then also created a wonderful poppy art piece.

9

As part of our Natural Disasters topic P6 designed, built and painted a Stratovolcano in small groups.

In between all of these activities we have been practicing our dances for the Day of Dance next Wednesday. P6 have learned these dances very quickly, I’ve been very impressed!
