This year Maths Week Scotland will take place from Monday 22nd September. The theme is Wild Maths, and as a school we’ll be exploring how maths connects to the outdoor, nature, and the wider world around us.
To make this event even more exciting, we’d love to involve our parents and carers. Maths isn’t just about something with do in the classroom, it’s a skill that’s used in many different jobs every single day.
We’d love if some parents and carers would be willing to record a short video (1 – 2 minutes long) for our learners, explaining how you use maths in your work.
You might include:
- What your job is
- The kind of maths you use (measuring, estimating, planning, problem solving, data handling, counting money)
- Why maths is important in your role
- (optional) Any ‘wild’ maths connection – maybe you work outside, with animals, plants, construction, travel or in ways that help the environment.
Below is a script which will help with your video.
- Introduce yourself
“Hello my name is ….. and I work as a …..
- Explain how you use Maths in your job
“In my role, I use maths when I… (give 1 or 2 examples)
- Link to ‘Wild Maths’ if you can
“This links to the outdoors/nature/wild maths…
- Finish with a positive message
“Maths is important in my job because it helps me….”
Please send your video to the school email address by Thursday 18th September.
Thank you,
Mrs Terras
