Local History

History is all around us.  Just spending a little amount of time looking closely can help us to see many artefacts from long ago.  In this video clip, Natalie finds some local historical evidence and encourages others to go out to see what they can find in their local area.

On our web page, we have also shared some activity sheets from our partners at Archaeology Scotland which give some ideas about how you can find out more and explore your local area.  Archaeology Scotland also offer the Heritage Heroes Award which is a free award inspiring engagement with heritage.  You can find out more by visiting our web page:

Creating Letters and Numbers Outdoors

As highlighted in our newsletter last week, we have been uploading lots of activities and resources for learners with Additional Support Needs.  This week, Aly shows you an activity which can be carried out with learners across all levels, but which might be particularly enjoyed by learners with ASNs due to the hands on, tactile and sensory nature of the activity.  Learners can create letters in their name, letters they know and numbers using natural materials, or even physically.

We have also shared some visual resources on our webpage which might support learners to better understand some of the situations around COVID-19.  Thank you to Kris Campbell from @Wbankschool for sharing these with us. Have a look at the web page for more information:

Note Taking and 30 Days Wild

Last week, Carolyn showed you to create your own notebook for taking outdoors and recording all that you see.  This week, we are following this activity up with some links to literacy experiences and outcomes and the #30DaysWild challenge.  Here, Carolyn shows you how she has been using her notebook over the last week and suggests some activities that you could share with your learners (or do yourself!).

Links are made to note taking and similes i with relevant Literacy experiences and outcomes highlighted. There are also links to support drawing and sound mapping. Find out more here:

Weather and Cloud Gazing

The weather and clouds can be really fascinating…and unpredictable, especially in Scotland!

Today we are really lucky to share a video a video from one of our colleagues, Hannah Polland of the East Ayrshire Council TAP Team. Hannah has written and illustrated a lovely children’s story, Just Be, which explores and encourages mindfulness and she has kindly shared it with us.  It supports taking time to ‘just be’ when you are outdoors.  This means slowing down, using your senses and paying attention to the little things.

We have linked the video to some lessons and resources on cloud gazing and exploration of clouds and weather on our webpage:

Cloud Gazing and Mindfulness.

Thank you Hannah for sharing this resource with us!

Making Shapes

Shapes are all around us, indoors and out and are easy to spot and learn about! Making shapes from natural materials presents a hands on way for children to create different shapes and think carefully about their properties. What do they need to think about to make a square and not a rectangle? Can they create regular and irregular shapes? Are some materials easier than others to use? Have a look at the activity page attached for further ideas on trying this out and on differentiating across levels: https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/ea/learningoutdoorssupportteam/making-shapes-from-natural-materials/

Aly’s video will give some ideas for making shapes outdoors and how to help learners think about the properties of shapes and using the correct Maths vocabulary.

Maths Trails

Maths trails are a fun and engaging way to use and learn maths skills outdoors. They can be used to learn new things, apply and enhance learning in different contexts and to make numeracy and maths learning relevant by linking it to real life and demonstrating maths in the world around us. On our website, we have collated both generic maths trails across the levels and specific trails for schools and towns that we have worked in. These can be easily adapted for different settings, levels and contexts and can be found here: https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/ea/learningoutdoorssupportteam/maths-trails/

Natalie’s video highlights some of the Maths that surround us in our outdoor spaces.

Making Music

We hope that you find today’s activity useful as we start to think about moving back into schools and using more of the outdoor space. In this activity, Peter will show you how you can make a set of tubular bells for your school grounds:

This would be a brilliant way for pupils to create music outdoors and work out some different tunes. For more information on how to create the tubular bells, please visit the activity page: https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/ea/learningoutdoorssupportteam/making-music-in-your-school-grounds-tubular-bells/

Additionally, this activity can be used as part of the vibrations scheme of work which is available as part of the Science out of the Box resource: https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/ea/public/learningoutdoorssupportteam/uploads/sites/11891/2020/05/20174952/Vibrations-Lesson-plans-002.pdf

Make a mini notebook

We hope that you have been using the ideas from our newsletter and website to get outdoors and have fun. In this video, Carolyn shows you how to make your own notebook which is great for taking outside to jot down anything that you see and do. The notebook is made from only one sheet of A4 paper and can be held in the palm of your hand, meaning that all you need is a pencil for taking notes when outside.   What will you or your pupils see and write about in the notebook?

Some ideas for using your notebook can be found here:

Build a Bridge

Spiders are master designers, creators and builders and their webs are amazing examples of clever, intricate engineering used to help spiders survive and catch their prey. Quite often, we simply brush spider’s webs away without thinking about the design work completed by these fascinating little creatures.   In this video and accompanying lesson, Vince compares spider’s webs to the bridges that we see all around us and sets an engineering challenge to build a bridge out of different materials you can find in your home. What distance can you make it and can you test how much weight it can hold? Visit the lesson page here to find out more: https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/ea/learningoutdoorssupportteam/design-your-own-bridge/
