Making Shapes from Natural Materials

Exploring shapes is a vital part of mathematical learning.  Learning about shapes in the outdoors adds another context to the learning and is real life, meaningful and often hands on.  Learning about shapes could be as simple as going on a shape hunt around the school grounds or local area.  However, creating shapes from natural materials is a great way to get hands on and think carefully about the properties of different shapes.

For teachers, this activity can be used to help deliver Es and Os in the CfE MNU curriculum at Early, First and Second Levels in Properties of 2D and 3D Shapes,  MTH 0-16a – 1-16a  2-16a.

What shapes could you create in your class, playground or garden?  What do you need to think carefully about?
