Goldilocks and the Three Bears Breakfast

We recently read the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. When discussing this book we discovered that some children had never tasted porridge before so we decided to have a special Goldilocks and the Three Bears Breakfast Party.

We helped Miss Davers write a shopping list of things we would like for our Breakfast Party. This included: Porridge, syrup, honey, chocolate chips, strawberries, banana, and chocolate and strawberry sauce.

Ami helped Miss Davers prepare all the treats for our porridge.

Here are some pictures of us enjoying our themed breakfast. Some of us would have gladly given Goldilocks our porridge as it wasn’t our favourite choice of breakfast. There were a few clean bowls though and some “Please Miss … can i have some more?”

Our trip to the Garden Centre

Primary 1 have been learning all about the Garden Centre. To bring our learning to life we visited Nurseries Direct Garden Centre at Stair. This provided us with a valuable opportunity to see the features of the garden centre and the role of the staff members.

We learned about plug plants

Robert took us around the greenhouses and told us all about the plants and flowers. He even took us to see the ‘dinosaur plant’. It was also known as a ‘monkey puzzle tree’ but he calls it a dinosaur plant because they have been around for many years. We liked to see it but not touch it becuase it was very spiky.

We were glad it wasn't a real dinosaur lurking in the Garden Centre. It was a Monkey Puzzle tree instead. Phew!
Robert taught us about the different types of compost.
We were impressed by all the different types of seeds.

Margo took us around the inside of the Garden Centre. We learned that the Garden Centre does not just sell flowers and plants. She showed us garden tools, pet supplies, bird feeders, gifts, books, toys, ornaments and much much more. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw all the packets of seeds. There were thousands. We learned that some plants can only be planted during certain months and that some need to be planted in different areas of your garden. We bought sunflower seeds to grow back in school.

We had to be careful near the garden tools as they were all very sharp. Margo told us how some of the tools are used.

After our tour of the Garden Centre we headed to the coffee shop for our snack. We enjoyed milk and shortbread. Many of the children thought this was the highlight of the trip!!

Bailey, Demilea, Callum and Carmen gave Miss Davers the thumbs up as they enjoy their milk and shortbread in the coffee shop. Delicious!

We bought plants to take back to school. Haili and Rebecca enjoyed carrying the basket together with our lettuce plants.

Native American Indians

Primary 1 received an important letter from Chief Coyahana, head of the Cheyenne Tribe. Their village has been destroyed by a fire and he needs our help to recreate a Native American Indian village in our classroom so he can get ideas for his new village. Through this topic we are developing in the following Curriculum for Excellence Outcomes:

“Oh help! Oh no! It’s a gruffalo!”

Primary 1 would like to send a warning to everyone at Kirkstyle Primary School and neighbours in the surrounding area. It all happened on Thursday 23rd February at 9am. Primary 1 arrived at school, strolled inside to hang up their jackets and witnessed this terrifying sight.

Who or what could it be?!?

We could hardly believe our eyes! “They’re massive” said Aiden. “It’s all muddy in here” remarked Anna. “Is that your shoes?” asked Miss Davers. “They’re too big” said Gemma, “It looks like a monster”. “I’m scared!” whispered Carmen as she looked around at all her friends frightened reactions. “It’s the Gruffalo!” shouted Bailey.

We followed the footprints from the toilet doors, down the corridor, to … … our classroom. “Oh no! It’s in our class!” screamed Connor. “I’ll go in first because I’m so brave” decided Joshua. The footprints went into our classroom, up onto the step then out of the side door. We had a look outside to see if we could find the Gruffalo but there was no sign of him. Primary 1 discussed what may have happened. Where the Gruffalo may have gone? What he was doing in our classroom? Then we decided to write exciting Gruffalo stories to let others know about our adventurous morning. Keep an eye on our blog for our super stories and keep your eyes peeled for the Gruffalo.

He's went out the door!
He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws. He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose. His eyes are orange, his tongue is black, he has purple prickles all over his back.

Wooden spoon Pr.1 winners revealed!

Kirkstyle welcomed two representatives from the local Wilkinsons store in Kilmarnock along with Mrs. J. McGoldrick East Ayrshire’s Determined to Succeed Enterprise Officer. The three judges were blown away by the standard and creativity of the ideas made by the pupils with family and friends help. It was very difficult to judge the competition and eventually the judges decided on three winners per group. Take a closer look at the winning creations.

Primary 1 Visit to Burns Museum

Our Primary 1 classes recently went on a trip to Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. When we arrived at the museum we participated in a tim’rous beasties workshop. This was ideal for building movement and language skills through imagination and performance and helped us work towards the following Curriculum for Excellence outcome:

To help me understand stories and other texts, I ask questions and link what I am learning with what I already know.
Children explored the museum dressed up as Burns’ wee tim’rous beasties. They particularly enjoyed a game where they were to hide in a field and protect their homes from a hoolet (owl) that would chase them.
We enjoyed various role play activities with Hannah. Look at our cute wee fluffy ears and tails!
After our lunch break we were joined by Alison, a volunteer for the National Trust for Scotland. She took us on a guided tour of other Robert Burns Museum destinations. We visited Burns Monument, Brig O’Doon, Alloway Auld Kirk and finally Burns Cottage. We enjoyed finding out about Robert Burns’ past and looking at artefacts.
