Enterprising Homework – Dem Bones!

Primary 5 excelled in Term 1 with their enterprising homework as part of their Science topic of Muscles and the Skeleton. The pupils were set a challenge to work cooperatively to generate a factual presentation to demonstrate their learning. The results ranged from; video presentations, which was the first we had had for enterprising homework and a very innovative approach, to posters, fact files and models. The pupils and their family learning helpers certainly put in huge amounts of effort and the end products were clearly and accurately used to demonstrate the intended Experiences and outcomes from Curriculum for Excellence.

By investigating some body systems and potential problems which they may develop, I can make informed decisions to help me to maintain my health and wellbeing.

SCN 2-12a

I have explored the structure and function of sensory organs to develop my understanding of body actions in response to outside conditions.

SCN 2-12b

Dylan’s pasta model was a very unique way of showing the hollow structure of bones and his visual aid showed clearly the sections making up the rib cage, the backbone vertebrae and arm and finger sections.

Robert, Christopher and Jack made a video presentation and proved themselves to be TV presenters of the future!

Science and Art Lillies.

Liliies for observation and dissection.

Primary 7 Science and Art came together in a series of lessons looking closely at lilies and labelling the parts of flowering plant involve in reproduction. The investigations and practical activities showed learning within their Science Experiences and Outcomes of a Curriculum for Excellence.

Through carrying out practical activities and investigations, I can show how plants have benefited society.

SCN 2-02b

By investigating the life cycles of plants and animals, I can recognise the different stages of their development.

SCN 2-14a

By exploring the characteristics offspring inherit when living things reproduce, I can distinguish between inherited and non inherited characteristics.

SCN 2-14b

Amy, Abbey and Connie worked in a trip to label their model diagram.

Scottish Wars of Independence

Primary 5 have started their Term 2 Social Studies learning with a hands on experience provided by History Alive. The class are about to start looking closely at The Scottish Wars of Independence and began with a walk back in time. History Alive brought artefacts and costumes for the pupils to try on and get a feel for life in ancient times. Using this type of activity way the pupils can talk knowledgeable and get an understanding of life in the past not just from the written word. These visits help the pupils to achieve learning within their Social Studies targeting the Experiences and Outcomes at Second level:

I can interpret historical evidence from a range of periods to help build a picture of Scotland’s heritage and my sense of chronology.

 SOC 2-02a

I can investigate a Scottish historical theme to discover how past events or the actions of individuals or groups have shaped Scottish society.

 SOC 2-03a

Bugs and Beasties – Invertebrates!

Primary 3 activities got off to a flying start and some of our parents and family members who volunteered their services as helpers joined in the active learning sessions.

Anna, Haili and Demilea using cray pas.

Ami, Carmen and Gemma designing a Beebot.

Callum painted his 3D art clay tile.

Erin, Maya and Chloe sorted their Invertbrates into categories.

Mr Holmes is now a seasoned professional as a helper with Primary 3 and is due to get a Blue Peter badge as they say “Here’s one  made earlier!” The boys are making 3D models of buzzy bees complete with head, thorax, abdomen, six legs and wings to show their science learning on invertebrates.

Nursery playtime

The children enjoyed their first playtime in Kirkstyle. Our positive play leaders in Primary 6 came out for an extra play session to encourage our new starts to explore the space outside.

Evie & Caleb tried bats and balls

When do we learn our scooter skills?

Up, up and away!

Ciaran fancied a game of rounders

I'm listening for the colour red!

Nursery Circle Time

The first visit to school sometimes seems very daunting for our new Early Years children and their parents. However the children enjoyed themselves singing and playing games with some eager volunteers from Primary 6,  Miss Boyd and Mrs Walls.

Circle Time is a positive behaviour technique that is used throughout the school to promote relationships through turn taking, patience and tolerance.

Kaporo Smallholder Farmers

The pupils in the school were very active in the school meals project ‘Mary’s Meals’ in previous years. At a recent Assembly we gave them an update about the East Ayrshire School Mbinda that came about as a direct result of the school meals project where every meal purchased in schools benefited the community in Malawi.

The school were approached by one of the local church represnetatives to ask if we would like a visit from some Malawian farmers who faces a lot of challenges compared to farmers in countries like our own.

Howard Msukwa and Susan Ntende visited Scotland all the way from Kaporo Smallholder Farmers Association in Malawi, to talk to the pupils in Kirkstyle. They described their farming life in producing rice which they currently sell through stalls at churches across Scotland.

The pupils learned about the demands of farming without machinery, using hand held tools in temperatures of 35-40 degree heat, in a climate that is unpredictable and irregular in its rain patterns.

We hope that this experience has allowed the pupils to consider Fair Trade items when shopping and appreciate the hard work and effort that goes into producing these items.
