Engineers of the future – K’nex

All pupils in Primary 6 across the Learning Partnership have been learning the basics of structural design and technology using K’nex. The schools then hosted their own school’s challenge and the winning pairs headed off to Kilmarnock Academy for the Partnership challenge – a closely guarded secret until the event.

Design an Astro-Fitness machine!

The scenario

It is very important for astronauts to stay fit and healthy but that can be difficult in space. Zero gravity means that astronauts float around the spacecraft, without using their muscles or burning any energy. Spacecraft must be fitted with specialised exercise machines that allow the astronauts to train in zero gravity. The astronauts are relying on you to design and make a model of a running machine that can be used in space from your K’Nex.

The challenge:

To build a running machine for the astronauts.  The exercise machine must let the astronaut run continuously but remember, room is limited on the shuttle.

Your machine must:

  • Be between 20 to 30cm tall and 15 to 20cm wide
  • Have a moving mechanism you can turn by hand or by some other method
  • Include a way to stop the astronaut floating away from the machine

Things to think of

Remember to discuss and plan your design.

How will you make your machine strong and stable enough?

How will you secure the astronaut to the machine to stop him floating away?

How will you build your moving mechanism?

Inspiration

There are lots of different ways to build a running machine. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking. Exercise machines such as a treadmill, a conveyor belt, an adult-sized version of a hamster wheel or a roundabout in a playground.

The winners and runners up were both Kirkstyle pairs!

Well done goes to Jade Cunningham and Megan Donnelly who will represent Kilmarnock in June at the East Ayrshire area challenge. Reserves for the event are the runners up pair of Greg Hillan and Adam Green.

Mothering Sunday

ASDA set the pupils of primary 5, 5/6 and 6 a challenge to create Mothers Day card, they provided the pupils with the card and left them to their own creative thought. Mrs MacKinnon took each class for a handwriting session and the pupils practised their flicks and joins in a poem for the inside of the card but the outside was up to them. Three winners received a bouquet of flowers for their Mums and an Easter egg for themselves. Well worth the effort!

Salmon Leap into Kirkstyle !!!

An Eggcellent view of 100 salmon eggs!
In go the eggs- all 100

Something fishy was going on in the GP Room this afternoon. A representative of Ayrshire Rivers Trust brought 100 salmon eggs for us to look after and study. Every day the pupils of Primaries 3 and 4 will study the eggs to see how they are developing. Eventually we hope to release our young alevins  into the River Irvine. Wish us luck!!

Prize Winners

The Cookbook Business Team in Primary 5/6 ran a mini raffle during the Fayre:

Kieran and Jamie Kerr won a fantastic cup cake maker

Deacon Lewis, Jodi McGill and Laurie Graham all won their own cookbooks to start them off in the kitchen.

The Living Eggs project team from Primaries 3 and ¾ announced their Chicken Land winners:

He crossed at N3!

Lara Fleming won a massive fluffy chick for her correct guess on “Where did the chicken cross the road?”

Will he share?

Ryan Lindsay won a basket full of chocolate eggs, for his 104 eggs in the basket correct guess. He was the envy of Assembly when they were presented!

Cook Book Business Venture

The Primary 5/6 enterprise team would like to encourage all budding cooks to upload or send in their recipes for the Kirkstyle Cookbook.

The pupils had a successful day at the Fayre selling a variety of tasty soups and biscuits. Individual portions of; ready to eat Cream of Mushroom and frozen two people portions of pea and ham, lentil and leek & potato soup and the always popular Empire Biscuits prepared  with the help of some Primary 1 pupils.

"Please Sir can I have some more?"
Top hat and Easter bonnet?

The pupils have added these recipes to their cook book business venture and ask that you do the same. You can upload your own recipe using the template on the website OR send your recipe to school and the managers will type it up and submit it for you.

During the Spring Fayre the business team took a couple of orders but are still on the lookout for more recipes and hopefully plenty of orders.

Day 5

Last two chicks have been moved from incubator to brooder box. We have one big happy family now. Although we’ve still had regular opportunities to observe our fluffy friends we’ve given them time to relax and get to know each other. Having our chicks has inspired us to start preparing for next Friday’s Spring Fayre. We have had some fabulous ideas all on a chicken theme! Keep checking our blog to find out what eggciting things are going to be happening at …..CHICKEN WORLD!!!

Watching you, watching me, watching you....
Let's cuddle up!

The chicks are not being left in the school for the weekend as it ‘s important that they get fresh food ,water and clean sawdust every day, so they’re off on holiday to meet Mrs Kirkwood’s family( but not the cats!)
