🧮☀️ Maths Week Goes Outdoors! ☀️🧮

What better way to enjoy a sunny afternoon during Maths Week than to take our learning outdoors! 🌳➕❤️

This afternoon, pupils across St Joseph’s enjoyed a fantastic session of outdoor maths activities, planned, organised and led by our brilliant STEM Leaders – Callum, Willow and Ebony. 🌟

Our STEM Leaders had thought carefully about how the afternoon would work. They organised everyone into groups, each taking responsibility for leading a group themselves, while also asking some of our P7 pupils to become additional group leaders. This was a great opportunity for our older pupils to practise their leadership skills while supporting younger children with their learning.

🔢 Hopscotch Maths!

One of the activities involved creating their very own maths hopscotch grids outside. Each group designed its grid and then came up with maths questions and calculations to use alongside it.

The really clever part was making sure the maths was differentiated for the age and stage of each group. This meant our leaders had to think carefully about what would provide just the right amount of challenge for the children they were working with. 🧠✨

There was plenty of calculating, problem-solving, movement and teamwork – all while enjoying the sunshine!

🏃‍♀️➕ Maths Tag!

Next came a very energetic game of Maths Tag! 😂🏃‍♂️

Each group took turns at being the taggers. If someone was caught, they weren’t automatically out – instead, they had to answer a maths question correctly to be freed and get back into the game!

It was a brilliant way to combine mental maths, physical activity and lots of fun, and there was certainly plenty of enthusiasm as everyone raced around trying not to be caught!

🌟 Learning Through Leadership

As well as all the maths learning taking place, the afternoon was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills.

Our STEM Leaders had responsibility for much more than simply joining in. They had to plan activities, organise groups, explain instructions, think about different ages and abilities, encourage others and help everything run smoothly. Our P7 group leaders also did a great job taking responsibility for their groups and helping everyone get involved.

A huge well done to Callum, Willow and Ebony for organising and leading such a fun Maths Week afternoon, and to all of our additional group leaders for helping to make it such a success. 🌟👏

Lots of maths + lots of movement + lots of sunshine = a pretty good Maths Week afternoon! 🧮☀️🏃‍♀️❤️
