🌧️💨 Maths Week Scotland – We’re Off to a Flying Start!

This week at St Joseph’s R.C. Primary we’ve thrown ourselves into Maths Week Scotland – and what a brilliant start we’ve had!

On Monday we set up our very own rain gauge and windsock in the playground. Each day we’ll check the rainfall and wind direction, record our findings and, at the end of the week, turn our data into colourful graphs and charts. 📊🌧️💨

Our STEM Leaders also planned and ran a fantastic outdoor maths session for the whole school:

  • Danielle led the traffic survey, where children worked in pairs to tally the colours of cars passing the school. Danielle even designed the recording tables herself on Word – amazing work! 🚗🚙
  • Nanci-Rose and Ava G led a fun symmetry challenge, where pairs laid a skipping rope as a “mirror line” and drew shapes in chalk for their partner to copy and match. 🎨✏️

The playground was full of teamwork, thinking and problem-solving as pupils learned that maths is all around us – and it can be active and exciting too. This ties in perfectly with the theme of this year’s Maths Week Scotland – “Maths in Action” – showing our children that maths is not just numbers on a page but a tool we use every day.

We’re looking forward to seeing how our weather data grows through the week and to sharing our graphs and charts soon. Well done to our brilliant STEM Leaders and to every pupil for making our first day of Maths Week Scotland such a success!
