Mr Webb, Quality Improvement Officer with responsibility for children’s Rights, came along to our school today to discuss children’s rights which are part of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The boys and girls shared their understanding of children’s rights. There was much discussion on why these rights are so important for children’s wellbeing and welfare. The whole school took part in a fantastically-planned World Book Day! Our morning began with a relaxed paired reading session where the older class paired up with the younger class and read from each others favourite books. It is Fairtrade Fortnight and P5-7 learned first hand how world trade works and how it is definitely not always fair! Each group were given a country: USA, Ireland, India, Brazil, Kenya and Tanzania. Jo from the Red Squirrel Group joined us today to talk to the children about how we can encourage red squirrels and other wildlife into our area. The boys and girls learned about loss of habitat and how humans can take positive action to support biodiversity in our towns and woodland areas. The P1-5 were very excited about their trip to Dumfries House. We went to the Valentin’s Education Farm where the children took part in different workshops through out the day. Both classes learned about the country of Palestine and the difficulties faced there. The Enterprise Group are very busy preparing for World Book Day on the 7th of March. The group have come up with ideas together, designed posters and sent home leaflets asking everyone to bring in their favourite book for the day. Today we combined digital technology with our literacy lesson on clarifying word meanings and got active in the classroom! The groups at the tables worked together with a chapter from our class novel to highlight words that they didn’t know. They then used clues from within the text to try and work out the meanings without using a dictionary. Each group also had a chance to work at the interactive
