Roles and Responsibilities

Under the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014, corporate parenting refers to the shared responsibility of public bodies, including local authorities and education services, to act as a ‘parent’ for Looked After and Care Experienced children and young people. This involves prioritising their wellbeing, safeguarding their rights, and working collaboratively to improve outcomes.

In schools, all staff contribute to this role, with a collective duty to ensure that care experienced learners are supported to achieve the same positive outcomes as their peers.

Being a Corporate Parent means providing secure, nurturing and positive experiences for children and young people in our care wherever they live. Where a child or young person cannot safely remain at home, it is up to us to provide them with the care, support and stability that they deserve, whilst maintaining the relationships that are important to them”.
